What is this? Why is it in the midwest?

I found this this sitting quietly on a siding on a business trip today. What and why?

    Weekend Trainspotting Questions

I was in Iowa again this weekend - I checked the local yard along the BNSF line - there were three dash-9s sitting there and no coal trains in sight. The track is CN and there was motive power present to handle their local freights and the only big BNSF trains that come through are coal. ...

    My Town, Aurora, MO

Thanks for the pictures - I'm in the planning stages of my grain terminal for my layout now - I love seeing things from around the midwest to add to the mental mish-mash that keeps gurgling through my brain.

Riding the new light rail in Minneapolis

I need to make a special trip up to take a ride. Despite the common theme here in outstate MN, I think this is some of the best spending of my tax dollars I've seen yet!

    Congrats to Lighthorseman

It would be nice to have the winning photo placed in the announcement thread, just for convenience. Thanks.

    Weekend Trainspotting Questions

I'm just back from a weekend in Iowa - just west of Fort Dodge. I saw more action in the little town of Clare in this one trip than in all previous and too numerous to count previous trips. 3 SD 40-2s on Friday, 2 Dash 9s and two 90 MACs today - all four idled for the holiday I'm guessing...

    Horseshoe curve

I have not been there. However, my invisible daughter has - it was a school project where a life-size cut out of her was sent via mail across the U.S. and to Ireland. On her return to Minnesota, one visit included a stop in PA and a post card of the curve. I got more joy out of it than did my...

    Walton Lumber

I received a Walther's Walton Lumber kit as a gift. I'm finally ready to place it on my layout and wondered if anyone else has it on there's. If so, I would love to see a picture or two for inspiration. Thanks.

    Tarps

If you want the modern tyvec/plastic look, cut a small piece of garbage bag. It can be stretched fairly tight and sinched up using tape on the bottom. Model airplane pin stripe works well for strapping as well.

    a matter of radius.......

I have a book called "Track Planning for Realistic Operation - Third Edition" by John Armstrong and Kalmbach Books. It really gives a great education on curves, easements and how things will work and look as they negotiate your layout. It also lists standards for track spacing, etc. I've...

    Spar Tree

I'll save this info just in case I ever get that 1:1 portable sawmill I've been wanting - I was wondering how I was going to move logs from the pile to the mill, now I know.

What do you do with all your boxes?

I pitch them. I can't imagine selling any of my prized rolling stock or engines - we've become too attached. I thought I was moving recently - I bought a couple of those bigger plastic containers with the lid and wrapped some cars in newspaper, tissue paper, etc. It seemed to be working...

    Random Generator

It just dawned on me that an inexpensive little application I bought for work might have use in model operations. It is a random number generator. You can select a range where the numbers will fall (1 through your total number of cars, say 20, 200 2000?); the total number of numbers you want...

    What color ballast?

The ballast flat car is nothing too special. It does however leave behind close the final amount of ballast after a few passes and it is spread evenly. I mounted the foam to the front of the car with sprew pieces from a plastic kit - I super glued them to the top of the flat car. The foam is...

    Sorry time is up

This is my first and only RR forum and your friendliness and professionalism, if you can call it that, set the tone for the whole community. Excellent work - thanks for taking on the job as long as you did. Will we still see you posting, etc?

    What color ballast?

I'll try to get a pic of the flat car yet today . . .

    CP's new AC4400's.

Thanks for the great photos - it's not often you get to see the proto in shiny brand new colors - or is that colours? wink, wink
