Moving to San Diego from Minnesota - Sell My Trains?

Oh by the way, I'm selling my current HO layout - in three rooms now, room to expand into another - just completed installing and ballisting an 8 track yard with 12 to 16 feet of storage on each rung of the ladder. I'm asking $200,000 and it comes with a hobby farm 2 miles from Mankato...

Moving to San Diego from Minnesota - Sell My Trains?

Thanks to all - it helps as I ponder the options. The career opportunity is worth it - I may just be able to afford brass or whatever I want in the future if things work out and I'm betting they will based on 18 months of experience leading up to this decision. I'm 36 years old and have many...

Moving to San Diego from Minnesota - Sell My Trains?

A career opportunity has put us on the path to San Diego. We won't have room for much of a layout. I'm considering selling and need your input. I have a modern diesel layout with around 200 freight cars and 12 kato and P2K engines - decoders, weathered, etc. I have several walthers kit...

Thoughts on modeling from the prototype

To each their own works best doesn't it? I dabble in the middle of free-lance vs. prototype. Seeing something on the tracks nearby makes it much more likely to find a home on my layout. I was in my LHS the other day and the store keeper and a customer were nagging back and forth about a...

    $421.12 per gallon!

The lid of the 1 ounce bottle of "Cement" Polyscale paint on my desk says $3.29. There are 128 ounces in a gallon. Yup, that's $421.12 per gallon. I counted the bottles I have on hand - 25 or more than $80 worth - ouch. I think for the most common colors I use I will take paint chips to...

    Pink Grain Hopper

I saw a very old and weathered looking pink Klemme hopper yesterday on the DME tracks between Rochester and Mankato. No camera on hand though.

    Jestine's Wholesale Lumber

Rock Island Mike - the lumber is basswood from the LHS. I cut it and glued it into the piles then used my kids crayola markers to color the ends.

    Pink Grain Hopper

I played little league baseball in Farnhamville, Iowa back in the early 80s. When I saw this car I had to put one on my layout. Farnhamville is a town in the flattest part of Iowa, it has about 150 residents but does have a huge cooperative grain elevator.

    Jestine's Wholesale Lumber

Thanks for the insight. I was able to find an F50 pickup at the LHS along with a couple of yard lights. Otherwise details were very slim. I'm adding tie straps for the straight truck and I hope to find a dumpster for the trash you mentioned. I would imagine there would be black metal...

    Jestine's Wholesale Lumber

A big thanks to everyone here on the Gauge for inspiring and helping make progress as an HO modeler. I'm on my third re-build in the basement in 5 years and here are some pics of the first corner that is nearing completion. The buildings are Walthers but I used several techniques/ideas I...

What is this? Why is it in the midwest?

I wondered about the sleepers - the cars have at least 10 AC/heating units on top - just like you would see on a camper/motor home.

    Weathering

I have my kids (age 9 and 6) scratch the car first and then sand the decals with 150 grit paper. Then I give them a dry brush of various browns, greys and blacks (a little tiny squirt of cheap acrylic paint from the craft shop on a paper plate - dab a little with the brush then brush it out on...

What is this? Why is it in the midwest?

A few more pics. . . Also, there's quite a bit of info on an anti-trust case, US vs. Harsco/PJ and Harsco was ordered to sell it's rail grinding (specifically switch and crossing grinding assets). ???

What is this? Why is it in the midwest?

Here's some more insight - the unit was sitting on Fairmont Tamper/Harsco property in Fairmont, Minnesota. They were working on building or re-building one of these grinding trains. Two friendly workers told me this was the water car that follows the grinding cars - it sprays water to douse...
