    Whats in a Name

Good topic Jimmy. i could have used an old nickname back in university, Switch. But it wasn't related for my model railroading. i picked Railery because of 'rail' in railroad. :)

    Heisler on route

Hi Uteram. i have the Olympus C4000 and it is designed for taking closeups. As close as 1.5 cm. But the C-720 ultra zoom is great for both closeup and distance, but u have to adjust settings. Personnally i wanted closeups for train and garden and one that u don't have to adjust. My partner...

    Sequence of construction

Hi Don. What i like to do is lay the track and wiring first. Work out all the kinks. Then i paint the track. If your working on a flat surface and u need to trace an outline of your track to lay your roadbed, this is a good time to paint the track. U get your outline at the same time. i...

Yep that is the pits. Missed all the action but i'm glad it worked out for u Bonky. :) i haved had my episode of flying off the handle too here on the forum. Funny thing, our hobby takes so much patience and i never fly off the handle when working on the railroad, but outside of the...

    Long term storage

Hi Woodie, alot of good comments for ya. i have had my layout stored for a year now and i used those big plastic containers u can buy at Home Depot, Walmart etc. U should be able to get them cheap. i used 20 of them for the layout and they are stackable. i kept all my boxes so that helped but...

    Hobby Shop or otherwise?

i use both LHS & the net. MY mail order isn't restricted just to the US, there are some very good Canadian ones too. Just a couple of weeks ago i ordered 3 katos SD 40(1) and SD40-2(2) for 126 ea. That includes all costs from an Ontario Hobby Shop. i like to buy from Internettrains and Long's...

Water damage - Help. Desperate and Urgent.

Hi Woodie, don't despair. Every year for 4 years in a row my hot tub connections would spring a leak and soak the train layout underneath. Everything on the layout was soaked from the first time. i let it all dry out and with the help of a hair blower. Don't run the engines until u have...

Hi Larry i'm the same way. i found u have to be pretty fair with a soldering gun. Installing decoder is easy. Putting in a harness or new board can be tricky.

    How does a Wye work?

Hi Val. Most turnouts are powered (Atlas). U still will need to reverse the power in the end section to come back out. This diagram shows X being power and Y being ground. You only need one gap in the mainline as is shown. The double pole double throw switch reverses the track polarity to...

    How does a Wye work?

One type of wye is the "Stub wye" which is the simplest wye for reversing purposes only. It is also the smallest size for a wye. There are a couple more wyes; Wye for diverging routes and a scissors wye. U can also do a double track wye. Here is a pix of a stub wye.

    Track manufacturers

i run code 100 and i have two peco turnouts. No problem with track height. Putting in the switch machine in under the track is a little tricky. Make sure u have some tape with u to act as a third hand. :D

type of wire should be used?

Hi Radrian, welcome to The Gauge. Buy electrical wire, then u don't have to worry what its made of. The size (diameter) of wire is expressed by a number. The smaller the number, the larger the wire. In North America house wire is usually No. 14. #18 or #20 wire are quite suitable to conduct...
