    My secend try

If it's built in N-gauge, then it might fit, (assuming the measurements are feet, that is...) though even then large locos might have some problems here and there - the turntable is, what, 5"?

    Another Newbie from England

As an alternative to the crossover, you might even want to consider making it a bridge/tunnel. Might look good next to the large hill if you're going to build that (with the main line disappearing into a tunnel or something and the crossing line going under or over it just before the tunnel.

    Transformer compatibility (type, scale, etc?)

Yep, I'm indeed a Euro. And thanks. Guess I'll first concentrate on getting started on the tracks and the scenery with only very basic wiring before getting started on the advanced stuff. The drawings on that website looked a bit daunting. Saw that exact train set which I had about twenty...

    Transformer compatibility (type, scale, etc?)

@60130 - Guess my use of terminology comes from that in the German-Dutch speaking world we're always talking about trafo's. Got to love the variations in terminology :) @pgandw - Hmm. So you mean it'll probably work, but it won't be pretty, and eventually I might want to replace them with...

    Transformer compatibility (type, scale, etc?)

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess I'll get by fine with the stuff I have. I expect especially the LEGO transformer to be powerful enough (judging from the immense size of those trains compared to small model trains.)

    Transformer compatibility (type, scale, etc?)

While planning my layout, and coming to the point of thinking about the electrical part - I came to wonder about the issue of transformers/power packs. The trains on the layout will be light, N gauge trains, and there is a small chance that two will be running on one cirquit. The first...

    Subway layout

A rough sketch, the numbers correspond with the layout map for orientation. This should also make it clearer which parts of the layout will be visible to the viewer. Only a small portion of the actual tracks will be visible - in a few places, such as the far side of the lower level, the train...

    Subway layout

Trackplan - first version. The layout comprises a two-level metro station, using Jack's biased turnout idea, assuming that it's best to have the biased direction to be straight ahead (hence the funny curves on the lower level part) Some explanation if you can see the tiny numbers on the image...

    Subway layout

Well, it's true that 1:169 would be something at a trivial level of detail. The difference lies in the order of half a millimetre on the width of the tracks (8,99 or 9,5mm), so even when measuring, one would need very exact instruments and numbers to back any claims of inaccuracy. :-) As...

Couple pics of my layout progress

Just some random ideas from the top of my head: For the middle part a low, densely wooded hill, with a road running over it might be a nice feature functioning as a scenic divider. A nice busy railyard on the foreground, and maybe a little road winding to a tiny settlement on the top of the...

    Subway layout

Thanks! Apart from the wheels - 1mm, 0,5mm, 0,25mm styrene and 0,5mm transparent sheet. The main problem with sheet styrene are round surfaces which many engineers of rolling stock seem to be fond of (just the subtle, irregular round forms, which I for convenience's sake, left out of this...

    Subway layout

A first picture... Trucks will be redone, some lights will be added (probably not working), roof will be painted. A few little details here and there. If you compare the model with the photos and the drawing you'll spot some errors, but I can live with them, as long as I keep telling myself...

    Subway layout

By the way, the gorgeous architecture is only something seen in the old, Stalin era stations - stations built later are increasingly more sober, with less and less fancy murals and reliefs, but with the newest stations, and then mainly the ones in high value areas, have very sleek modern design...

    Subway layout

This is getting more interesting all the time - you guys are giving some first class advice here. If 6" should be possible, then that will surely be attempted. Are there any differences in the flexible tracks or can they all be bent to roughly the same range of curves? jetrock - that's exactly...

Couple pics of my layout progress

Nice layout. Overall colours look a bit bright to me (especially given the large 'soccer pitch' in the middle and the autumn tree colours. Any plans for the big green field in the middle?

    Subway layout

Jack, I'm afraid I'm having trouble visualizing the layout you described.

    Subway layout

Thanks for the ideas. The one with the 6" curves would be more or less ideal, but somehow I think the trains won't agree. The solution to get them turn anyways, would be to have some guiding rails on the outside of the curve which would physically prevent the train from derailing (It's hidden...

    Subway layout

Allright - I decided to start building a little layout. One which will fit onto a bookshelf, as I haven't got too much space, but I have some spare bookshelves, and it would be a shame to waste that space. As a theme for the layout I decided to build a subway, the Moscow metro to be precise...
