    Cookie Cutter Method

I must say that cost is pretty much relative. I mean - how much rolling stock, trees, buildings, whatever do you buy for $16.50? And as you can use most of the wood you cut away it isn't a very bad deal at all. But that's my €0,02. :-)

    Creative use of space wanted

One option might be to make the layout small enough to store it as/on a shelf (ok, that you more or less ruled out, but wait:) which can be taken down to a lower level in it's entirety for operations, construction and general showing off to the public and then you can put it onto something of a...

    Subway layout

A full six months have passed since the last update but finally the subway has started taking shape. A little commentary to the pictures: The shelf - this is literally a shelf layout, as above the layout are bookshelves. (Now quite a bit fuller than on the picture... Well, this is the final...

    pictures: Szeged(Hungary) - Subotica(Serbia)

A few pictures from the line Szeged-Subotica taken a few weeks ago. First, third and fourth picture belong together and are the most interesting ones. This is a railbus (Schienenbus) of a type built in Germany in the 1950s and while most of them are on scrapheaps and few are in service as...

The most beautiful catenary in the world...

I lived in Leiden myself for two years and commuted with exactly those trains for years too, so maybe I can't appreciate them as much anymore. Whether beautiful or ugly - they certainly are unique. To my delight, at another route on which I travel fairly often, the train always passes a yard...

The most beautiful catenary in the world...

Don't have any pictures to share about my layout (yet), so I'll share this little snapshot I made last weekend: 24th of June, Hollandse Rading, Netherlands. Train pictured is a Mat.64, plan V. The regular short distance material used by the NS (Dutch Railroads). But what's so special are the...

That looks beautiful! I think there might be many people looking for just that.

    New shelf layout design/build thread

If you're locating the planes and especially hangars in the background, you could try modeling them in a slightly smaller scale, to a. save space and b. create the illusion of (more) depth. If you'd be very adventurous, you could even build the hangars with some degree of perspective in them if...

    Inspiraton please

Looks superb! Am I right that you didn't have to change very much to get the few slightly odd pieces to fit well? (the long turnouts, mainly)

Pondering about how to lay the track

Thanks for the replies. Currently I have a sheet of 3-4mm thick sheet of triplex as a base (on top of the framework), so I guess I'll get a sheet of foam next week and to start carving.

Pondering about how to lay the track

Being pretty much ready to start thinking about laying some track, I started pondering about the best way of doing it. A few notes/questions: - Glueing the track directly to the wooden benchwork is probably a bad idea given the noise it'll produce. - A thin sheet of styrofoam, the blue/pink...

    fiddle yards

That idea sounds ace. I'm going to use that. However, I've only planned three tracks on my fiddle yard - know of any suitable musical instrument to serve as a basis for that?

    with or without dock?

Given the overall appearance of the building, adding the dock would add atmosphere. A little roof over the dock part might look nice as well, by the way.

Its FRIDAY 2-17-06, Weekend Modeling Plans!

Building the benchwork for the layout. In fact, already got started. And while hauling the materials from the diy shop, again I was reminded why some people consider a car practical.

    New Code 55 Switch.

Just had to double-check that this is the N/Z scale board. Indeed a pity that it's difficult to fit into a layout where every inch counts...
