    Making Your Own Figures

Oh, and a little addition - sculpting a dozen figures, preparing a mould and casting them costs money and lots of time and patience and requires some talent and skills. If you have some experience sculpting kneadadite you could sculpt a figure in one hour (assuming you're working with batches of...

    Making Your Own Figures

Making them out of clay will be too much work (most types of clay are not suitable for such fine work) If you intend to make figures from scratch in order to duplicate them by making resin or pewter castings, you should use two part epoxy such as milliput or kneadadite as that is both very...

    Scale power and weight

Just a wild guess: speed required taking in account the weight pulled and the track used with all terrains, curves and whatnots included plus a little bit to be on the safe side but no more than the regulations as to not to waste resources. Don't ask for the maths. By the way, does anyone here...

    Scale power and weight

Theoretically, yes, but if you would miniaturize a 1:1 engine to 1:87, the mass per unit of volume would also be reduced by 1:87³. However, as plastic has a lower mass per unit of volume (=weighs less!), the 1:87 engine with plastic parts would weigh less than 1:87³ of the prototype. Model...

were to get n sale track

Well, maybe this comment isn't liked by everyone, but if you're on a very tight budget, I would suggest ebay. However, you may risk buying a cat in a bag, but you can find second hand locomotives and track for very little there. Of course, some hobby shops may also have them, and you might be...

    Scale power and weight

You're correct, Power and weight should also be divided by 87³. But the mechanics of model railroad rolling stock (friction!) are again different from the real thing (how often do you see a train made largely out of plastic, for instance?) And a real engine is steel and lots of it.

    wire glass update

Looking good! What you might also try is to paint the netting if it isn't exactly the right colour. I did that for a piece of camo netting once and the little bit of light brown paint made it just the right shade and while it would seem that netting is a pain to paint, it does work with some...

    Help! Anyone sale their talents?

Proposed trackplan Allright, after a few hours playing with WinTrack, I came up with the following. The resolution of this image is abysmally low, but I can email a higher resolution version or upload a new version. I have used Fleischmann Profi track as a guide for track, but I guess the...

    CA problem

It could be that it's only partially hardened and that you still can use something of it. My solution after once encountering a ruined bottle of CA was to buy it in small, small quantities, so the risk of having 3/4 of it going wasted is minimized. What also helps is to zealously clean the...

    Help! Anyone sale their talents?

The folded dogbone as the basic shape as Russ suggests would probably be a sensible option. One idea I came up with, which is more or less a variation on this one, is a primarily single track running all the way around the layout, with some type of scenic divider (just height difference or so)...

    Subway layout

Frustrations! Finally I finished cutting out the tunnels for the tracks and put in the track to run a train a few times back and forth - Constant derailments! Aaargh! I'm going to scrap everything I've build until now and just opt for a pizza layout with one two-axle engine! Allright...

    Help! Anyone sale their talents?

It might be useful to have the length of the upper peninsula and the angle at which the lower peninsula connects to the rest. Also the size of the small triangles at the inner corners of the 2' wide tables would be useful. On which sides of the layout will access be blocked by walls (no big...

    Help! Anyone sale their talents?

The drawing seems not to have come through. MSPaint should be sufficient if you mention the dimensions. Make sure the attachment isn't too big...a small jpeg should work best.

Maybe you've also said it somewhere but which gauge, era and theme are you planning for? The one thing we'd appreciate in return are pictures of the layout as it's built :-)

    N-gauge escalators? Any kits available?

I need about 1 to 2 feet of escalator for my layout (4 or 6 of them) and was wondering whether there are any convincing kits available to build them, as I think scratchbuilding would be quite fiddly. Doesn't have to be anything fancy, just something for the railings and the steps. Thanks!

    3D 4' x 8' Table design

Looks very nice! Do you know in how far it's possible to sculpt further details in the landscape? Would be awesome to either import or design trackplans as well. (Although there are a few trackplanning programs which allow 3d modeling previews as well)

    Help with cutting sheet styrene

My experience is that for some reason xacto knives are too fine to be used in conjunction with an edge. The blade seems to be so thin that it doesn't follow the ruler. Also, I might suggest you to just use the sharp edge of the blade and run it lightly. If possible, draw the line you need to...
