A model railway show in Holland

Graham, A good quick way to resize your piccies for here, is to use Hotmail. Just use the "attach picture" (not file), and send them to yourself. It will resize them for use on the web at 640 X 480 automatically. Just by emailing the pics to yourself. :thumb:

    Making Prickly Pear Cactus

Prickly Pear!! AAAARRGHHHHH!! It is a declared noxious weed here, and you can be fined if found growing it. It was a major invasive pest in the early parts of last century. from ***click here*** However, it's control was one of the most successful biological control of a...

For discussion - how do you name your layout?

You guys seem to name your layouts after the railroad company that runs on them. Just to throw a different slant on things, in Australia, we don't do that. We usually name out layouts after a town/locality/region, and not the railroad company. It's only recently here, (last 10 - 15 years)...

what glue to use to glue track to roadbed

emt, I don't glue my track down. I may pin it down, just to hold it in place, then use the ballast (and hence, glue) to maker it stay in place. For curves, etc, I may use a few tacks/brad nails up against the outside rail/sleeper, but I don't specifically nail or glue the track down first...

    Base paint color

Thanks for the comment, Douglas. :) I just bought a big 10kg bag of plaster from the hardware shop. a scoop outa that, with about 1 litre of water. They tell me that adding a teaspoon or so of vinegar slows down the setting process, but I don't see it. Perhaps I should use more vinegar...

    Rail dimensions

Didy_Tz, You say your are modeling in HO. Even within this scale, there are different track sizes in use. "Code 100" & "Code 83" and "Code 75" . That means that there are different sized rails in use by the modellers and track manufacturers. As others have suggested, I do not know ANYONE...

    Base paint color

Douglas, Have you put anything over the foam base you are using? Are you trying to paint the foam directly? You need to put something over the foam that will take the paint correctly. Say, plaster bandage, or plaster soaked paper towels. You can then use plaster to mould some rocks and...

    Astonishing Statistic

hmmm.... interesting. The basis of this article was along the lines of a few comments. Public Liability Insurance cost, fitting of modern signal control equipment, health checks for drivers (don't want them having heart attacks while tooting along), fitting of deam-man handles etc, due to...

    Astonishing Statistic

The circumstances here were no different, Andrew. There ain't been a regular/scheduled steam service here for more than 40 years. There may be a little difference here. The infrastructre was not destroyed, but just left to rot. However, should a steam loco be off round the state or...

    Astonishing Statistic

Tileguy, The working steam locos here are not owned by corporates or "railroads". They are owned by preservation societies, historical societies, and are used for holiday excursions, tourists, charities etc. and have, for the most part, been restored from derelict or donated disused equipment.
