Remeber too, Tony, that once you move to DCC, it doesn't mean you cannot run your layout in "DC Mode". Just flip the switch, and use a different power source and controller. Your DCC locos will run quite happily on DC. There is a config option (in most DCC decoders) to set DC operation...

Thanks David for that. Yep. On mine, it's the "reverse bit" in the decoder config. However I wanna run them configed and installed to the main defaults and wiring if I can. When you run a cuppla these, it's pretty arbitrary which is the front end anyway. :) :cool:

Bob, If the motor is isolated from the frame, then it should be OK. Some locos (dunno bout Athearn) have the metal chassis as part of the connectivity from the track through to the motor. There is no way of breaking that connection to put a decoder in the way. Whether a decoder will fit...

I understand the standard decoder connections and what they're for. The red & black are quite easy to determine how they're connected. (left & right track pickup). However the grey and orange are the + and - connections of the motor. This will determine which direction the loco goes in...
