Now that is my kinda trestle. :thumb:

In the true sense of things, Garry, you are correct, however I would err on the side of caution. Unless absolutely certain, then I wouldn't be doing it with my DC locos. Remember that a lot of DC locos also have 12 V incandesant globe headlights, or constant brightness circuitry (using 1.5 V...

    What are these?

Peco make a flextrack with "concrete" ties (or sleepers as we call them here). Concrete sleepers have been used here (in Australia) for as long as I can remember. Oh yeah... don't get me wrong there is still a lot of timber ones, but all new, and upgraded lines are all concrete now.

You can do this with DCC by setting two loco's CVs (consist address) with the same "consist" address. This is different from the loco address. Then you'll select the "consist address", and away BOTH locos will go. However, you will have noted that different locos perform differently. One...

    MRC Prodigy Express

BTW, Herc Driver, having "DCC ready" locos, does NOT mean they will run on DCC track. That just mean they are capable of having a decoder easily installed in them. Otherwise, they are still your ordinary old DC locos. Nothing more.

    MRC Prodigy Express

There is no way you can "assign the non-dcc diesel a default address". A non-dcc loco does not have a decoder in it, so you cannot "assign" it an address. The only way you can run locos that do NOT have a decdoer in them, is on DC track. There is no other way of doing it. Do NOT put...

I went the whole hog!! :thumb: NCE Pro with 8 AMPs of power, radio cab, and tethered cab as well. Command station also has computer interface. I looked at it this way. By the time you decoder equip quite a few locos (specially with sound), the cost of the cab/throttles/command station etc...

    What is DCC?

Basically, Gil, Instead of your DC controller varying the voltage on ALL the track that it is connected to, and hence ALL your locos will start/speed up/slow down/stop according to the varying voltage on the track, DCC has a constant voltage on the track. i.e. full power. Each loco has a...

Are all DCC decoders created equally?

Shahan, I run NCE, and use their base decoder (D13SR). No "plug" as such, and have hard wired/soldered the decoders into my locos. And yes, old locos are still noisy. However, due to some fiddling, and twisting of wires etc, on two of them, a wire broke off right at the decoder. However, I...

I too, don't quite understand what you did. Did you unplug your DCC system, and return your layout to DC so you could run your other DC only locos? (including the DCC loco?). There should be no problem placing a DCC equiped loco on a DC track. It may not work, depending on CV settings, (DE...

ahhhhh.  Thanks for that Tom, who is form Long Island. (I presume).

Are all DCC decoders created equally?

I don't think there is any such thing as a "lower quality" decoder. Less functional, yes, but lower quality. No. As suggested, digital technology is digital technology, and on is on, and off is off. yes is yes and no is no. black is back and white is white. There is no hazy inbetweens when...

    Lost Wax Castings

So do they have to do this process every time? Especially if they break the plaster cast to get the solidified brass out, and they don't have the original sculpted wax object cause it got "lost"? i.e. resculpt the wax object every time? Or do they mould the object from molten wax, in a cast...

It's fine in this far flung outpost of the British Empire. Goes just like a bought one, it does. And It's got a heck of lot further to go to get here. :):) sign1

    Lost Wax Castings

I've got to ask, cause I'm yet to work it out. It's one of those things you're expected to know, and might look silly if ya don't. So I'm gunna look silly. sign1 Brass Lost Wax Castings for detailing bits. I know what the brass is, but what's lost about them, and where's the wax?

What's the hold up with NCE

I have the NCE Pro Command Station with computer interface, and just use a serial cable into the serial port on the computer. Works fine with JMRI software. Do you have the Command Sation or the new "powerCab" stand alone controller?

    Programming a Locomotive

    WOW!! sign1 :D What a guess! It works. :) But your sums are not quite right. You want long address 4167. Divide 4167 by 256 = 16 with remainder 71. i.e. 16 * 256 + 71 = 4167 or 256 goes into 4167 16 times, with 71 left over. Set CV17 = 192 + 16 = 208 Set CV18 = 71. To use...

The Great Wahl Clipper Oil Experiment!

Clean your track as normal first, Herc. And remember, a half a raindrop sized drop would have been more than enough for the 120 feet of track I have. I'm not talking at each point on the track, I'm talking the ENTIRE track. So a third of a half of a drop, if I was to put it at 3 spots around...

    Programming a Locomotive

What I've said should work (if it works at all) on the loksound decoder (well any decoder actually). I'm not familiar with the MRC Prodigy, dunno if it will let you program CVs by their number or not.

    Programming a Locomotive

It's CV17 & CV18 you've gotta set the long address in. A bit in CV29 says whether to use long addressing or not. My NCE cab with LCD display just says "enter short address" - <key in short address>, than "enter long address" - <key in long address>. "use long address" <key 1= yes, 0= no>...
