    Train Station kit

You asked what we think, so here goes. It's a nice building, overall; but I personally don't care for the upper story -- too "modern." It may appeal to others, though. I'll go along with the wood siding instead of brick, however.

    Other hobbies

That's quite a collection of hobbies. I guess mine include ANYTHING railroad related, perhaps prototype more than model, aviation, photography and listening to classical music. I am also on the Board of our local regional theatre, so I guess you could say I have an interest there. Not the...

    been some time

Scooby: Welcome back. I, too, have been away from the Gauge a bit and had not even heard about your son. The stone is a wonderful tribute. I wish you and yours the best for the future.

    Main North American RR Companies?

Thanks to Triplex for posting such a nice, concise review of the situation. I was going to chastise for not mentioning my favorite, the New Haven; but, on a closer look, I found it. This is a good review for lots of us old timers, and a good primer for the newbies.

    Hope this works...Please leave feedback.

Looks good, especially to someone who has yet to try to build mountains, or any other scenery, for that matter (no layout).

    The state of Amtrak

Several nails have been hit on the head here. I agree, generally, with what was said at the beginning of this thread, and pretty much what has followed. Now for some additional comments. I ride Amtrak when I have the time and it goes where I want to go. Therein lies the problem. I don't...

Cabs of loco's in a consist?

I'm strictly guessing here; but most, if not all, cabs have heaters. I don't know how long it would take to warm up a cold cab; but my guess is they would not turn them on unless the cab was occupied. I have also heard and read that sometimes other crew members will ride in one of the "other"...

    Conrails recent derailment

PanAm is the new name for Guilford, I believe. They bought the rights to the old PanAm Airways logo etc. and are now using for their rail operations.

The Gauge where is it at ?

Ok. Just so I'm not a laggard, I'll post this. I would caution, however, that if we get too many people posting, just for the sake of posting, we could end up with a lot of drivel. I've seen it happen on other fora, and I'd hate to see it happen here. This is a great place and I enjoy just...

    Internet Myth

I've seen and heard this story many times. It is a good one, and probably as logical an explanation of the width of standard gauge tracks as any. However, I don't think we'll ever be able to verify the authenticity.

    Numbers game...!

Thanks, Mikey. I guess that makes me an active member, then, only just barely. I probably manage at least one post every 30 days, but I enjoy lurking.

    Numbers game...!

Interesting stats. I have no idea where to even take a wild guess on the questions, but I have a question of my own. How do you define an "active" member? Is it regular posters, anyone who has posted in the last xx days? or what? Curious minds want to know.

Mannnn I really hate it when they do this!

You're right about the diesels smoking. When I was at the Grand Canyon Rwy. a couple of years ago, I saw one of their trains starting up from the Williams station and those Alcos were spewing more black stuff than most steamers do!

    Who says Cabooses are gone!!!

I think the term "van" is rather universally used in Great Britain; and, in the US, the PRR called them "Cabin Cars", so there are lots of different words for the same useful little rail vehicle.

    Who says Cabooses are gone!!!

Not only do old habits die hard; but new ones don't "hatch" very well. I never even heard the term "shoving platform" until reading this thread.

Welcome, Jesse. It's great to see descendants carrying on a great hobby such as this.

Mannnn I really hate it when they do this!

I think it makes sense to have a diesel along on a regularly scheduled tourist run, for all the reasons mentioned. In the case of a railfan special, I think that sometimes they will drop the diesel to do a photo runby, which is nice. The diesel is still available, however, just in case...

Mannnn I really hate it when they do this!

Most "steam" excursions I have been on in recent years have the diesel along primarily as HEP. However, they do sometimes use it as a helper when needed. AFAIK, US steamers, for the most part, do not have diesel controls to MU; but I think that's a great idea.

"Hobos" Good or Bad or Dont Care

Hmm. Taking pot shots must be the latest rage. Heard a tale the other evening from a Hump Conductor who works in Allentown, PA that he spent the evening dodging bullets a few days ago.
