    Programming

I don't, but I'm thinking of writing one too... It occurred to me that operations (which I haven't got into yet) tend to be described in terms of either huge unit trains, or car cards with destinations and return addresses, or even random arrangements. But surely the movement of freight cars...

    Will this be enough room?

That's huge. And as complex as you want to go. I'm running on a 2400x1200mm layout at the moment (95x47), and there are 57 turnouts on the layout. It's probably bigger than I expected it to be, and a lot more work. I like the look of the long thin layouts, but then I like a continuous run...

    Dilemma....N vs HO

Opinion 1: I had the same problems, and was very disappointed with the reliability of locos. Solution: run only Kato locos, and use the Atlas and LL locos as either "towed" locos, or retired engines left on stub sidings... Problem gone. Opinion 2: I don't think there's a difference in scale...

Its FRIDAY 7-29-05, Weekend Modeling Plans!

Congrats Tom! Oh, it's probably over by now... :-)

    Overhead power lines(simulated)

Check out this for very cool power lines, from Berkshire Junction... Charles (I know they're not catenaries, but I'm sure they could be used as such with all the same advantages during cleaning and other work).

Its FRIDAY 7-29-05, Weekend Modeling Plans!

Men pouring concrete all weekend between me and my train room. So I can't get in until Monday ! :-(

    Info Needed....

Just for the record, are you bidding on the undecorated A/B pair? Don't want to step on anyone's toes...

    Info Needed....

Easy peasy to install DCC, 1015 couplers fit onto it, the best running engine I've got by a country mile over all other non-Katos, slightly better runner than my other Katos. Worth every cent, whatever you pay for it.

    The M.A.T. goes mushroom

Many good wishes, Robin, on your move. It freaks me out thinking you're going to have to rip up this layout... on the other hand, we've seen you making enough changes that the next one will likely be even better, if that's possible. I'm much more sedentary -- I only got started on a layout...

    Confessions of an Engine Illitererate

trainworm -- great answer. My solution -- buy one. I am hopeless with engines, although of the models I actually own I can identify the difference between different types of RS-2, and I'm getting the hang of GE critters by building them. An I know different F3's. Anything I haven't bought...

    Steep Grade

Hang on hang on... we're all relaxed and sleepy over here on the Gauge. We do try to help, honest! No idea what you're on about, but you mention grooved plates on the track... are you sure they were 'on' the track, and not grooves cut into the track (e.g. with a Dremel) to increase friction...

    Orlando Model Train Exhibit

Thanks for the pictures Tompm... but what is it about G-scale that makes people use ridiculously tight curves and completely forget about ballast? As an N-scaler, I often think about getting into G-scale outside -- but once you're outside you have loads of room (ok here they're inside, but it's...

Can Someone Update me on the Horizon / Walthers News

As Larry correctly states, it's waaay too early to tell. Of course we all on here want more great N-scale locos, steam or diesel, and we very much hope that LL might make that leap under Walthers... Although there are many naysayers, we can still hope... But even if one was a pessimist...

Bugger! Now I need one of those as well as the laser cutting machine I want... :-)

Walthers Purchases Life-Life Toy and Hobby Division

Well that's absolutely fair enough. Good on 'em for having customers with good experiences. I only wish that I was one of them. I know I'm British talking to Americans, but that was neither sarcastic nor ironic, honest! :-)

Walthers Purchases Life-Life Toy and Hobby Division

Oh absolutely. Obviously my comment only represents my experience -- many other people may think many other things! And I understand that most of their products are less expensive than some alternatives, and that means that they should be of lower quality, but I believe that they should still...

    Help!

Actually you may have inadvertently done it better than you expected. The advantage of wiring DCC with separate blocks is that now you can easily upgrade to block detection, transponding, and signalling... most DCC systems can recognise that there's a train on a section of track (isolated by...

Walthers Purchases Life-Life Toy and Hobby Division

I can't see how this would make much difference. Both companies make junk. What's the big deal?

    Metal Wheel Conversion

Eeeek. I hope you can get it to work. I found that any of my cars with metal wheels (when stopped near an uncoupling magnet) get dragged towards the magnet. Which completely mucks up the uncoupling action, even if it's a tiny movement. If you have a long string of cars (and you're uncoupling...

    Metal Wheel Conversion

Peco are different too, tho you might not have those. Doesn't NWSL make metal wheelsets too? Be aware that swapping to metal wheels means giving up magnetic uncoupling (if you didn't already know...)
