    Blue Pink Foam

You might find some in a bigger B&Q warehouse, but it is rare in NZ too. I found a sheet of low-density fibreboard (sort of like woodchip wallpaper but 1/2" thick). It's very light and was used in the 60's before plasterboard was common and when you wanted a bit more insulating capacity than...

Opinions on various n-scale gear for noob

Bachman Spectrum transformers and EZ-track -- just say no... Woodland Scenics scenary/layout kits -- possibly -- the separate products are good... Kato UNI Track -- if you want attached roadbed and no flextrak, yes. WRT to the N-scale tutorial site, it's fairly good, but it assumes you want an...

Its FRIDAY 10-28-05, Weekend Modeling Plans!

My wife's off to a conference abroad at 4am tomorrow morning, leaving me five full days to do some layout work, with the assistance of my two-year-old. Time to use up some glue I think!! :-)

    HO shelf layout...need advice

Whilst I love and use N scale, you don't need to go there with that size of switching layout. But you do need a better layout. The switchback and lack of runaround will bore you senseless. And, as has also been said, it'll be daft unless you use tiny steam or diesel switchers... You need...

    peco switches

Not sure what you mean here. I like very slow very small engines, so I solder everything together in yards and switching puzzles. I hate having to prod a train to get it moving again! On my Peco 55 switches, I now do the following before laying them: 1.) Chop the wiring on the back that...

Its FRIDAY 10-21-05, Weekend Modeling Plans!

Probably get something done this weekend, it's Labour day over here on Monday... Tomorrow we're going to take our two-year-old on The Weka Pass railway...

    noob in need of help

Stick with Kato if you want them to run reliably. They should be less than 100, but they won't be much less. Steam more. Sorry, mate, that's how much they are...

N-Scale Loco that can do 7" radius?

Most any small ones (i.e. with four axles) will make that -- I have RS-1 and RS-2's that can do that, and F3A's. It's right at the limit of my VO-1000 (depending upon how accurate my measurement was!) -- some locos can cope with a slight tightening for a short time, but not 90 degrees of it...

Want to see the Bowmanville show?

Love the buildings on that English layout... Is that a school? reminds me of my primary school... remember to have gates marked "Boys" and "Girls" one at each end of the playground along the wall...

    Some Ideas Please :)

I'd be very careful about buying a set for someone else, especially if you (or he) hasn't decided on what to model yet... you don't know what scale or era or anything he might like. On the other hand, it's a bit naff buying gift vouchers (that's the sort of thing your Auntie does...)...

Noob to trains and the Gauge

Same reasons here Tom. Unitrak doesn't have flextrack (and has a limited selection of turnouts). I chose code 55 for looks, and I chose Peco because it had the largest range of electrofrog turnouts, and because of the good things you head about it... Electrofrogs are slightly more complex to...

Noob to trains and the Gauge

Hi Dave and welcome. As a recent newbie myself may I humbly suggest: Check your track plan again and again to make sure it's what you want. Perhaps even post it on the Layout planning forum in here, and get suggestions. It's very hard as a new modeller to see what operational limitations and...

    Switchbacks for Thought

Oh yes, I didn't mean that there weren't such things, just that they had additional complexity, and the prototype wouldn't have bothered with it unless they had to -- i.e. much more likely in an urban setting where the real estate costs balanced the equation. In a switchback situation you're...

    Switchbacks for Thought

Lookin' good TC... My comments might include: (1) does the three-way switch add anything except complexity? I don't think it would be prototypical either would it? not sure thought... but anyway... (2) it would be useful to have the lower runaround a bit longer, you might not be able to...

    Staging Help Needed

11" is absolutely no problem reliability-wise in N. It looks daft when you have long (85') cars, and you need to make sure you don't have problems with overhangs touching things nearby, but neither of those is an issue here. With very long trains (e.g. inside helices), you can improve...

    Liquid Adhesives

Bear in mind that the good glues aren't pure solvent, either. Tamiya clear (brush) cement (the capillary action one) is 88% solvent and 12% resin, for example. The resin helps to fill gaps in the join. You won't get as good a result with pure solvent. As has been said, I think this is a...

    HO radius recommendation

The neatest trick I saw was the hinged 'gate', with a single track running over the top of it. It's easy to get in and out, and provided it's made with appropriate accuracy at each end it should just swing back into position. Clever wiring to stop trains accidentally falling off the edge...
