    Laying yard track

To avoid confusion, I think that was a mystery HO-scaler there... (they go to N-scale roadbed to get half the height). With N-scale roadbed, just gently slope it down to nothing with shims, or don't bother and do the whole yard with the cork...

    Standard gauge????

New Zealand has entirely 3'6" gauge, like most of Japan (apparently) and Australia originally did, on the recommendation of the UK at the time. (Remember that the UK at that time had only recently come down from broad gauge which was HUGE). New Zealand is still entirely 3'6", but Australia at...

New to Train Modelling + Need Advice

Morning Mr Toast, As it happens, I was in Melbourne a few months ago. The shops in the city seemed a bit rubbish (or non-N-scale). The one under the big brick station was hopeless, but a little one in the twee touristy arcade in the centre of the pedestrian part of the mall was pretty good --...

I wonder how much of a big layout I could fit in 10x4ft in Z?

To show how misleading things on the net can be, here's the above picture 'corrected' to their actual scales... G is really huge...

    Molds and Rock Faces

With rotation and surreptitious chopping, it's surprising how varied you can make a limited number of moulds look. I managed about 18" of cliffs out of one WS mould, and you can't see the repeats (unless you know where to look). I would have thought three would give you a lot of rocks...

I wonder how much of a big layout I could fit in 10x4ft in Z?

That's a bit of a misleading (read: wrong) picture. On30 should be the same size as O, and HOn3 the same as HO. Only the track gauge varies, not the size of the locos. S isn't 3:16 at all, it's 1:64 (sounds like a mistyping of 3/16" to 1 foot). Z is 1:220, not 1:225. The pictures are not in...

Good looking model, Frankg... Did it go together ok? How does it compare with other structures you've done? Charles

    New LED Website

Good link, thanks! They also have sunny-white leds, which are much nicer than the warm-white ones -- less orangey and clear when they're off. I ordered a load! Charles

    Peco Double Crossover

Nope, that's not true. Atlas code 55 causes problems with older wheelsets. Peco code 55 doesn't, because of its design...

So, what does your wife think?

Alright, maybe partner / fiance(e) / xxxxfriend of either gender. Recent posts on here and other boards made me wonder how you guys all get on with the 'other half' and model railroading... This poll is about model railroading only (not railfanning or related activities) -- what do you think...

    Kadee uncoupler.

I'm an N-scaler, but have had a similar problem, fixed in one of two ways -- either (1) raise the trip pin (so the magnet has a lesser effect on it), or (2) remove and re-insert the trip pin angled slightly further towards the edge of the track (when it's at rest). This way when the magnet...

    Still planning

I wouldn't be too frightened of bigger grades. Sure, grades on curves count as tricky, and anything over 2% is going to require shorter trains or more engines, but it happens. It isn't prototypical for huge trains crossing continents, but it certainly is for smaller branch lines and shorter...
