    So what is "narrow?"

Don't forget the DDM45! :thumb: It's an entirely South American design.

    Need MR article copies

Try the search feature at Trains, Model Trains, Model Railroading, Toy Trains, Trains.com . I typed in "model railroader building the USRA mikado", and came up with 3 articles in 1983. If you remember the actual title, it will probably bring all of them up in a single search.

Unitrack on plywood, how about noise ?

I use Unitrack for my temporary and mock-up layouts. It's great stuff. Flawless reliability, doesn't warp like other brands, higher quality rail, always in guage, excellent electrical continuity, the list goes on.... But.... Unitrack on plywood is definitely loud. I find it distracting when...

    Car Hits House.

Many cars built in the last 10 years will no longer make you any money at a scrap yard. The yard itself will make a small profit from ripping it up, but you, most likely, will not. With the growing number of plastic, fiberglass, and composite parts in modern vehicles - they have become too...

    My Thoughts on Preorders

Pre-ordering special runs makes sense. Pre-ordering standard (common) locos and rolling stock doesn't. Regardless of the reasoning, I've had horrible experiences with special orders and pre-orders in other businesses. The MRR industry better enforce very high standards of quality control and...

    So what is "narrow?"

Nope, just a minority that was smart enough to be able to use more rails than their own.

    Ahh The Memories

I watched that a few weeks ago. Check out the steam videos in the 'related clips' section. Great stuff.

    Durango vacation - picture intensive

Firstly - Great pictures and thank you for sharing. Secondly - Today I finished "Uintah Railway, The Gilsonite Route" by Henry Bender Jr, 2003. So, I picked up my recently acquired copy of "Narrow Guage in the Rockies" by Bebe and Clegg, 1953. I picked a random page to start reading... lo and...

    Train "boneyard"

Makes you wonder what images are conjured up if you mention a phonograph.... There's nothing quite like winding up our family's original Edison phonograph, and listening to cylinders cut 100 years ago. :thumb:

    Car Hits House.

Duct tape and Great Stuff expanding foam should do it.... Looks like the train budget just got a little bigger! :thumb:

How to fixMP15 defective truck ?

It looks like one side of the truck frame is not properly snapping onto the gear case. I've had the same problem with trucks. It's hard to spot, but the little clips will hang up just short of where they should secure. Also make sure the axles are sitting the right way in the truck frame.

    Question for Canadians ...

I've made purchases from the UK, Japan, China, and Canada for train related items. All have been shipped to the US. Although I had a shipment of multiple Kato chassis held up in customs for 14 days, the package was never tampered with. I have never had to pay any import fees, or had any...

Hercules Powder Co. wood refrigerator car

I avoided posting this until now, to avoid hijacking this thread. It looks like quite a few people are interested in Hercules Powder Comanpy, though. One sad, but true fact about this company is the claim to one of the most horrific explosions ever seen in North America. Hercules Factory...

Hercules Powder Co. wood refrigerator car

Ed, here's your prototype, now in Walter Haffner Company paint. (The car's original paint) http://www.rootsweb.com/~mivhs/images/vbmtankcar12.jpg I can't read anything on the car itself to identify what the contents would be. Due to a wide variety of products coming out of the Hercules plant...

Hercules Powder Co. wood refrigerator car

Wow... how could I miss that.... "For Nitrate of Ammonia and Nitrate of Soda Loading Only" I have powder cars, this particular car was used for explosives. Totally different beast, and a perfect explanation of why it was kept cool.

Hercules Powder Co. wood refrigerator car

Beautiful car, beautiful product, beautiful company. I grew up reloading with Hercules, and own 5-6 of these cars. As for stability issues... You don't really have any possibility of spontaneous combustion until you reach temps of 350 degress+ (depending on powder). It's a matter of the...

    The ill-forgotten Goose

I posted in TrainNut's review thread, but I'll repeat what I said here. The N scale DCC goose does have problems due to it's feather weight. The N scale DC goose does not, in my experience. Since that post I have talked to 2 other people with the DC version. They have the same opinion as I...

    Scenery and dryer sheets?

Nah... Anywhere you see MRRers, you'll get advice like that. "Necessity, the mother of invention". -Victor Hugo, 1852.

    Aussie Train Smash

"Road Trains" are common in Australia. Had this been a road train rig, he may not have had time to stop. These trucks often operate at what other countries would consider unsafe speeds (70 MPH+), on the long, open stretches of highway. These rigs are usually a high horse power / high torque...
