    Canadian Steel Mill

Brian , I can't take credit for the water/paint technique but I can't recall specifically where I saw it . It may have been someone on the Yahoo Groups / Steel forum , and possibly Dean Freytag , but I can't remember . It's a lot of fun to use in specfic situations but is rather messy . Neil

Plaster Clth? Good, Bad, Or Ugly?

After a lot thinking and experimenting , I finally settled on plaster cloth for my mountains . I created a strong basis for it with cardboard strip lattice work . The plaster cloth takes pretty well to the hills and valleys you have created . Make sure the edges overlap and smooth them together...

    Canadian Steel Mill

Here's an update on more work as I start to connect the turbos from the power house to a mill building . The ore freighter is a Bearco kit , heavily modified to resemble the Edmund Fitzgerald but not finished yet as to final details . Neil

    Canadian Steel Mill

Thank You : Here's a tip on some of the rust , particularly the pipes . Get two cans a flat spray paint , one flat black , the other , red oxide . Spray the black on ( something ) first , then mist on some WATER . Before anything dries , spray on the red oxide . Go away for a couple of hours ...

Robin , this is HO and mostly CPR . I've got a couple more that I've been struggling with on size .One is the lime kiln itself and the other is the ore boat that will service the steel mill .

    Canadian Steel Mill

I've been watching Robins pics of his steel mill over the last several months and am building my own starting with the adjoining lime quarry and into the steel mill backdrop with false fronts . Neil

    L-Girder to Subroadbed Problem

The way I go about it is to cut the curves from plywood first . On my layout , nothing is less than 30" radius , so i cut a number of 30's and also 36's according to what I need . I clamp risers on the joists where needed and simply lay the plywood curves for a look see . It is trial and error...

The Atlas Forum is up and running again

I belong to Atlas mainly to look in on DCC discussions . I did learn a number of things , including the use of 'suitcase connectors' which have turned out to be perfect for a lousy solderer like myself . Anyhow , when I logged in the other day , Atlas wouldn't recognize my user ID and password...

    Model Shop shunning ???

Interesting discussion . Fred has some interesting points on what it's like to wear your 'business hat ' . I live in Canada , but at a border city . When I buy from the U.S. , I have it shipped to friends in a neighbouring U.S address that is close to me . Everything works fine that way ...

Train Shack Complete Ready for layout.

I'll echo what was said above regarding the 5' depth . I think down the road you will be very unhappy with trying to work with such a depth . A carefully planned 3 foot depth can provide as much mrring fun as you can handle . Ten years ago , in the old house I had a layout with areas that were 5...

Moving to San Diego from Minnesota - Sell My Trains?

In my situation I put my stuff away for almost 10 years , not due to a move , but other issues . I'm glad I kept it because what does go around , comes around . I guess just ask yourself what the future may bring before you act . If there is a possibility of mrring in your future , keep it . NEIL

Is Ho The Same As 00??

Boy , I had forgotten all about Tri-Ang , but that's what the guy had , now that you mention it . I had a Marx O scale (3 rail ), but remembered thinking at the time that the TT could get more train in a smaller space ( duh ) ...I was a little slow on the uptake at 12 years old . HO had not...

Is Ho The Same As 00??

This discussion has prompted another question , similar topic .Decades ago ( 60's ? ) a neighbour had , I think , TT scale . This was during the O scale heyday back then . Was it close to HO ?...seemed to be although it's hard to remember . NEIL

    Inadequate obituary in MR

The people in mrring back in the 60's are those that I still refer to from time to time. It is no disrespect to the many fine people of today . I just feel a comfort and a loyalty of sorts to Armstrong , Allen , Wescott , Jack Work , Smallshaw , Frary , MacClanahan , Koester and many more ...

    Do You........

It's too bad the subject can cause issues among folks but it seems to ,from my experience . I run DCC at home and wouldn't have it any other way after my DC layout of a decade ago .Like anything new , DCC can be intimidating . Ten years from now I would think DCC will find it's way into the...
