Mike Hagarty's N scale 'Mountain Sub'

Sure Dennis, I'll PM you with my number and you can drop by, Grant hasn't had to many op sessions this winter, so I had to get my own layout going again! His layout is amazing, and gave me the inspiration for my last one.

I'd need about 70 switch machines if I wanted to do the entire yard. I think I'll just stay with manual!

Almost all of my engines are Kato, SD40's, SD40-2's,AC4400's and SD90's. The only Atlas engines are some GP40's and GP38-2's. ( They would be Kato also, if they still made them! ) I do also have 5 Life Like GP9's, I got them very cheap a while back, I think they were $15 each! They made good...

All the switches will be manual, just like a real yard. I can't imagine how much it would cost me to make them all power!

Mike Hagarty's N scale 'Mountain Sub'

I got most of the main yard laid and wired now. I still have to do the diesel shop tracks and some industry, but for now, I can run trains into the yard and switch them out on the yard leads. ( now progress will slow! ) There are 17 tracks with 3 leads in and out to yard and switch to. Here...

I'm using Atlas flex track. ( It's all from the old layout too! ) I shouldn't have to buy any track or switches for this layout.

Here is the first part of the Mountain Sub, up until now, I've been working on the Foothills Sub. This is west of the main yard, there will be 3 tracks with some industries on each side of the main. I also finished another section in the main yard. There is now 2 seperate yards...

Hello mabelair, and welcome to the Gauge! You plan looks good, however I too thought the 2 runarounds look a bit short, you could easily make them a bit longer with out changing very much at all. But again, it's your layout, if it works for you I saw go for it! I too learn from my own mistakes...

Thanks guys! All of the switches are Peco #8 long radius. (36" diverging route.) I do have some medium radius switches, but they will only be used on some industrial areas. ( Those areas will be restricted to 4 axle power!)

Most of the track for the staging yard got installed today. There are 11 tracks, 6 of them are tied in on both ends, the longest tracks will hold 65 cars, the shortest ones, 48 cars. I'm going to try to finish the rest of them tomorrow and install feeders. I had to put a few more trains on the...

Very nice work! It's amazing how much a bit of green on the layout chages the way it looks! :thumb:

I think I will try to lay all the track first, then start on scenery. After I run the layout for a while, I usually think of different ways to do things. It much easier to change the track BEFORE scenery is in! I hope to have all the track laid by spring and have the layout fully operational...

I finished laying the track in the one of the grain elevators. There are 3 tracks, each will hold 12 grain cars. It's all wired and everything works with out any derailments. CP9524 is just about finished spoting the empties, I got some pictures this morning. There will be...

    It begins...

If you rise 2" in just over 8 feet, or 100 inches, you will have a 2% grade. A simple way to figure it out is use a 2 foot level, and raise it up on the low end with a 1/2" piece of wood, when it shows level, you have a 2.08% grade.
