    Tips-n-Tricks

Heres a tip I just learned. Take the twist tie strips that come in the box of garbage bags. These make nice looking corrugated tin. Cut to size for roofs, fences, etc. glue framing on the flat side. Paint it all silver and weather to your liking and install your new roof, fence or whatever else...

    Tips-n-Tricks

Easy and disposable paint tray Cut the bottom 3/4" or so of a 2 liter soda bottle off. Put a little bit of the colors you're going to use in each dimple. Use empty dimples for mixing colors. When your done painting throw the tray away, no clean up.

    I found this photo...any guesses?

Hi All, That has to be a SP cab forward. Quite an awesome engine to see. There is a beautifully restored one sitting in the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento. Sorry I don't remember the number of it though. If anyone gets that way it is definitely a must see. An added bonus is you...

    The World of Plaster

Another method of making mountains is using heavy duty tin foil crumpled up and then spread out across the mountain to be. This gives you some texture right away. Then cover it with your plaster and paper towels. I used this method on several layouts including a temporary Xmas layout, until I...

    Another Question?

Let me first say the above stories are heartwarming. Now my story. My father has always had trains around and started displaying them in our business for lack of room at home. One thing led to another and it became a business within a business. I spent alot of time there and ended up helping to...

    Gone fishin?

No, no that's just a member of the Underwater Train Soceity(Yes, this is a real club) showing off again. I am a member of the club myself, but unfortunately the club much like the fire in this engines firebox has about fizzled out. Just to add to the above story, a few years ago a local lake was...

    Fascia

Hi Mike, I have used several things to apply fascia to layouts. I normally use a pneumatic finish stapler with 5/8" or 3/4" staples. But if you don't have access to one, go to a hardware store and get panelling nails. These come in various lengths and colors too.

    What Water?

I used WS EZ Water on my modular layout. It looks good but I made it too deep. The water is too clear for the depth. Oh well, live and learn. I used an old soup can to heat it up in and a pair of plyers to carry and pour it out with. The nice thing about EZ Water is you can use a heat gun to...

    Dry Brushing

Hey Woodie, Dry brushing is using your paint brush with very little paint on it. Such as when you are painting something and are just about out of paint on the brush. Thats how much you want for dry brushing. Then you just lightly brush the area you want to weather. I have only done it a few...

    It's LOUD now

Hi All, Another thing to consider is the floor of the room. If it is concrete, tile, vinyl, etc. all of these add to the sounds. If you put ddown some carpet this will help absorb the sound. I know this problem well, I have O and S gauge inside. My home layout is built with a 1 by 6 inch pine...

    How Much Should I Buy??

Hi MSH, I agree, start with the 3 colors. If you need more there will be a Great American Train Show on Sept. 14 & 15 in Charlotte. There is always a full selection of scenery stuff from Scenic Express available at the shows ( at least here in CA, anyway). Just a tip, if you buy ground foam put...

    Oddball motive power

Hi All, If you drive down freeway 99 here in the central valley of California you pass by many grain silos. Several of these have their own S-2 (or similair) switchers, but those who don't use skiploaders with a coupler mounted onto a steel plate that hooks onto the bucket. This works much the...

    gargraves or atlas

kev2, By all means go with the Atlas O track. If you are just getting started the Atlas track is easier to use than gargraves. Also it's alot more durable than the others on the market ( try stepping on it and see if anything happens to it, I HAVE). As far as the price, the individual sections...

    Advice On Concrete Slab

Hi All, Here is another product to use. Durham's Rock Hard Putty, it comes in a powder form. Just add water and your ready to go. I have used this for paved areas, road easements, row crops and small hills. It is tan in color when dry but can be painted easily. I use spray paints, but I think...

    Couplers

Hi Bob, There is a coupler made that will couple Kadee to horn/hook type . Sorry but right now the name escapes me. My dad went through the same thing a few years ago with his rolling stock. The conversion cars are the way to go for now, but also consider making some engines that way.

    model railroading missionary

CSX, I hope you will become an ambassador for WGH. I am one myself. What you are doing with your layout is exactly what the campaign is all about. This hobby needs more young people like us ( I am 32 but still consider myself young). Good luck and congratulations on a great job. By the way have...

Need help on building a mountain

Easy mountains Hi All, Geodesic foam mountains are the only way to go. Light weight, very strong, versatile and easy to make. I have build several mountains on layouts using this stuff. Anyone can make great looking, realistic mountains in less time than it takes to build the supports for...
