    God's Wonderful Railway?

Ordained Independent Baptist...been working in building maintenance since my last position as youth pastor. Model trains were there long before that though, even when I was into medicinal herbs and spices and working as a carney.

    PROTO:87 vs. Regular "Standard" HO

I well remember the first time I saw PROTO 87 wheelsets, I was very impressed with how fine they were. If you're not that far in, there's no real reason not to give it a try. Even if you are well invested in the other, a diorama or module wouldn't be too tall an order...8 square feet of...

    PROTO:87 vs. Regular "Standard" HO

Those folks lost me in a discussion about truck springs properly flexing in proportion to weight:eek:...life's a bit too short for all that. Now, if you'll excuse me, my Tyco GG1 needs a clean and lube...:thumb:

    IHC "sound" car

The axle has a brass contact that runs the length of it and wraps about a third of the axle. There are two wipers that touch the axle that run up into the "load" in the gon. It's actually pretty cool in a simplistic, low tech way. The sound is synced in such a way as to sound pretty...

    IHC "sound" car

I have one and, yes it's hokey, but I think it's a hoot. Nothing shuts those annoying sound chips down quicker than me and my bud running ours together behind...oh, say...my matched Athearn C44-9Ws:p:mrgreen::thumb: Here's what you get...

What era draws your attention the most?

For me it would be the late 60s, early to mid 70s. There was still enough first and second generation diesel power to keep things interesting. I still have memories of a B&O F or E unit hauling a short freight when I was 10-11 years old, that would put it at around '70-71 when that happened...

    Weekly Photo Fun 10-17/10-24

From my, "It's amazing what some folks throw away." file... No, I don't go dumpster diving, but I do get amazing opportunities to intercept the ball in the red zone an awful lot...:thumb:

How about a scale vehicle thread

Nice work, epaw. I remember when the railcar kit first came out in '76, only to recently find out that is was someone else's mold from the 60s:thumb: Josh, I tore the place apart looking for Racer X's original car, the movie versions went way beyond my realm of plausibility:p As for not...

How about a scale vehicle thread

Nice track, Ed.:thumb::thumb::thumb: Something I just found at Walmart, they come in race damaged as well as clean. Wasn't interested in the movie versions and am in hopes of seeing Racer X's original car. Come on Mattel, you gotta make a Tumbler now...

This might be ridiculous, but hang with me...

Nothing wrong with that, go for it. Atlas spikes are steel, the bluing may have to be stripped off though. Don't forget to pre-drill the hole for the spike so that the plating isn't wore off going in and post pics when you're done....oh, and don't forget some kind of monument nearby...:thumb:

    Mantua 0-6-0 trouble

It sounds like your drivers may be out of quarter. Check to see that the crank pins on the rods are at the same position on each driver---and/or---you may have over tightened the motor to the gears. The roadbed track is much more reliable than the old sectional track. No manufacturer had...

    Scrap yard

Nice work, I love the foil thing. I did it with my son some time back because he's a monster truck fan. Swiping the idea from NASCAR candy, I'd make up a batch of cars and he had a blast crushing them. That scrapper is a pretty convincing piece of work, too.:thumb::thumb::thumb:

The old 32 to 40 foot wood and steel reefers

Two of my favorite and oldest reefers, I hope sometime this winter to finish them and eleven others off this winter and run a string of them at local train shows. They are Strombecker paper and wood kits from the late 40s early 50s...and yes, I plan to use truck mounted Mantua hook/loops for...

    Mantua 0-6-0 electrical help

What I did was add extra wipers between the drivers on my Athearn Hustler. I would do the same thing on that one, though it would require a closer look as to just how. Eventually, I built a dummy slug unit that stretched out the contact points beyond the switch frogs so that it would operate...

    Reminiscing-First Train Set

My first true set was an N scale Arnold Rapido F unit set with four cars and a loop of track. It was Christmas 1970 and I was 10 years old and on top of the world. Before that, I have fond memories of a Fisher Price set similar to the Brio and Thomas ones sold today, and a battery powered set...

Oiling rods & drivers on brass steamers

Yeeees, an ally:mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen: It always erked me that more HO manufacturers didn't go the N scale route and gear all the drivers ala Atlas, Con Cor and MRC years ago. Yes, it is a little bit of a trick to line up the quartering but, once done, you have quite a puller. There are...
