NKP 174: I think your 4-12-2 is the direct ancestor of the 4-6-6-4 Challenger. I read an article a while back that said the UPRR was looking for an engine of that size with more traction, so what they basically did was split the drivers from the 4-12-2 to the 4-6-6-4 configuration. Tey...

Mad Hatter. Which Roodepoort do you live in, the one near Jo Burg, the one in North West, SA or the one in the Free State. I'm assuming the first one as it seems to be the only one with a railroad nearby! I spent some time in Poitchestroom when I was there in 2001, but that would be the closest...

Mad Hatter, you can come here anytime and see a Big Boy and a Centennial too if that interests you at all. There are several railroad museums here in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area and you can see lots of really neat railroad related stuff.

Where was the picture taken? Looks to be a "D" Zug (local).

I imagine the best run are the German ones. Many years ago I lived in Germany and they were the most prompt mode of transporation I have ever experienced. The Austrian RR was also excellent. If you enjoy a little adventure in your life, in 2005 we rode trains from Prague to Budapest, stayed...

Having ridden on many of the European railroads (UK, France, Germany, Italy, Austrian, Czech, Hungarian, Slovakian and Croatian), I too would have to put the Italian ones near the bottom of my list. I have yet to ride one that left or arrived on time! The few French trains I have been on were...

Although I crossed and recrossed the mainline several times as I moved north from Cape Town to Jo-burg, I actually saw very little traffic anywhere!

Come on back to the caboose and get a cup of coffee [or sweet ice tea] Part II

Lots of great looking equipment there

    D&RGW power

There is the absolutely grungiest looking SP yard switcher here in the Council Bluffs yards. I will have to try to remember to take my camera along when I know I am going to be down in that part of town. Also, up in the other end of the area I see from time to time an old GTW blue engine...

Good Idea and Expand on it???

Polar Bears I see that this thread that I started back in 2002 is still sort of chugging along. I started it as an idea about all of us placing a polar bear somewhere on our layouts like an article in a couple of MMR magazines. We then drifted off to the "Gauge Box" and had great fun with that...

I also quit the train club here. Great club layout in a railroad museum, but they never do anything. Meeting night are a gab session, no one runs the trains, haven't had an operating session in well over a year. Just seems to be a waste of money to belong. There is another club in Omaha, just...

Come on back to the caboose and get a cup of coffee [or sweet ice tea] Part II

I just looked and I haven't checked in since June, so I'll say hello. My layout looks exactly the same as it did last time I came by this way. I just don't seem to have or want to take the time to move on. I did replace a turnout I didn't like, but other than that, there it sits.

    Wye

David; One other point. I assume I have to insulate the wye, correct?

    Wye

Thanks very much David. I have the reverser left from a previous layout, so that's not a problem. My problem was I have decided not to install a turntable, but instead substitute a wye which will do the job nicely for me. :) Bob

    Wye

I would like to include a "wye" on my layout. I use DCC. Am I coreect that a wye is basically the same as a reverse loop? If this is true, where do I place my automatic reverse loop polarirt reverser? Thanks

    Interesting Sighting

Thry are blue, but I haven't been close enough to them to see any of the markings. They are all numbered in the 800 series I am told.

    Interesting Sighting

An interesting piece of information I picked up yesterday was that last year the IAIS purchased two Chinese 2-8-2 steamers and had them brought to Iowa (google Iowa Interstate and you can see them on their website). Our question is whether or not IAIS might not be getting ready to set up some...
