Where are the Great Young Model Railroaders?

I think also nowadays, you don't see or hear the new "ideas" so to speak. So you may not hear a lot of names being tossed around like you did then. If you think about it, when John Armstrong came up with his walk-around throttle system it was something that no one else had done. There's a lot of...

    Goodbye to the V&O

I wish I knew. All I know is the podcast for March was recorded on like the 27th of Feb. (Scotty Mason says something about it on the podcast) so I'm sure the move has already happened and the layout is probably going, going, gone.... :( I know when he dismantled the original layout (below)...

Interview with Tony Koester (Part 1 of 3)

I compressed it down as much as I could without sacrificing too much quality. It's still around 20mb, it's a pretty lengthy interview and this is only part 1. My apologies to all of you with a dial-up connection.

    SF&E set to break ground

Hey Matt, Too bad you're not still here in MI. Midland is getting a new coal fired power plant! Hopefully this will mean more traffic coming up the CSX Saginaw Sub. It'd be nice to see more trains coming through...

    Goodbye to the V&O

In the interview Tony talks about how he was really the first person to come up with the "beyond the basement" theory. He says before that, every model railroad was pretty much what you see is what you get.

    Goodbye to the V&O

Not sure if any of you heard about this or not, but the legendary V&O (Virginian and Ohio) that was built by Allen McClelland is no more. This would be the second version of it, the one the book was written about was dismantled back in 2001. On this months Scotty Mason podcast he interviews Tony...

Great Train Expo Show Novi, MI

I have to agree with you Christopher. I went on Saturday and was quite dissapointed with the number of layouts that were there. As far as the dealers that were there, well that was kinda crappy too. Lots and Lots of HO, barely any N Scale dealers. It wasn't as good as it's been in past years. I...

Hand laying tracks and meaning of #6 vs #7?

On properly manufactured turnouts, there is no radius at the end of a turnout, the end is supposed to be straight. IMHO, I wouldn't go any smaller than a #6 with a big-boy, but that's just me. If you're handlaying them, without a template (like Fast Tracks) then you could make them any radius...

Hand laying tracks and meaning of #6 vs #7?

This answers might help: "The numbers refer to the frog angle. The higher the number, the smaller the angle and the longer the turnout. A number 6, for example, turnout is measured by 6 units from the point of the frog to where 1 unit between the diverging rails occur. A unit can be an inch...

So, what does your wife think?

christopher62, you had to give up paintball???? What a bummer! As for my wife she just doesn't understand what the big deal is. She'll never understand why I can go to the DMRC in Holly when they have their open house and literally stand there for 2 hours watching trains go around...... Just...
