    My freelanced railroad

Here's the latest vehicles to hit the rails on my freelanced layout. These Light Rail Vehicles (articulated trams/trolleys?) are Japanese prototype. This photo shows one of the new sets testing a freshly ballasted section of track on my "turning" module. No other scenery done there yet.

    Very Small Motors

Ray, LOVE the aviation flavour on this part of your layout (my other passion is aircraft). What DC3 models are they? (scale/manufacturer) They look really sweet. My airport was so big I had to make a choice between IT and my model railroad. Now it is dismantled so I can run trains...

    Progress photos

My little "tutorial" on painting clouds / backdrops is on page 2 of the index - look for subject heading "Painting clouds & backdrops" or try this link, it should take you straight there:- http://www.the-gauge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2906 Gavin Miller BTW, it is really...

    Progress photos

Luis, The clouds came out really well. Are you happy with them? I think you've done a really professional looking job!!! I notice the intermodal terminal area has been "paved". Not too difficult? I know it can be tedious getting the heights "just right" - that is, just enough...

    My freelanced railroad

He heh ... I used a SLOW shutter speed and panned on the moving subject. Yeah right! Truth is, the train was stationary. I used Photoshop's "Motion Blur" filter to blur everything in the photo except the train which I had excluded by outlining it with the "lasso" tool. Looks...

    My freelanced railroad

One of the newest additions to my fleet is this (Japanese prototype) high speed electric set known as a 21000 series Urbanliner. Here is a photo of it "strectching its legs" on its first shake-down run under the catenary on the RailNet mainline. Gavin

    wiring

Joe, Here's my advice on wiring:- Keep it SIMPLE by keeping it NEAT! Don't be tempted to use any old bits of left-over wire you happen to have hanging around. Colour-code all your wiring (if that means buying new stuff - do it! It will be a LOT easier to trouble-shoot later on when...

    Magic Contest winner

Tyson I loved that photo the first time you posted it (with a different background). Enjoyed it again after your "magic". Very well done. Well deserved win. Congratulations. Gavin Miller

    Finally got started

David, it is looking good so far. Isn't it great when you can finally start running trains?! (your imagination can "fill in" the scenery for now!) Once you are "on a roll" and have overcome the inertia of getting started, you find you can make great progress. Keep us posted. I'm...

    Lighting up structures

Ron, If you have quite a few buildings to light up, I suggest you use lower voltage bulbs in "series" rather than 16V globes in "parallel". For example, a series "string" of 12 1.5-volt g-o-w bulbs "daisy-chained" together will draw approx the same current from your power pack as one...

    Track cleaning in N gauge

Boy, I'm having lots of problems getting into "The Gauge" site at the moment. Then when I do get in and post a message, it takes forever to come back with another "page not found" message. I try again and get "Sorry, the moderators only allow one post each 30 seconds" (huh?!) I try...

    Track cleaning in N gauge

Nick, Here is a photo of the Tomix track cleaner. You can see the motor's bearing sticking through the top of the body. The motor drives rail cleaning discs (or a vacuum impellor) below. You can also see the black cap covering the cleaning fluid reservoir. The control knob has...

    Track cleaning in N gauge

Nick, Check out the Tomix track cleaning car. It has an on-board motor with interchangeable heads for track sanding, polishing or vacuuming (yes vacuuming!). It also has a chamber for liquid track cleaner which is spread on the rails with a sponge. I just ran mine around my layout in...

    Magic Photo Contest

Here is a photo I can't entirely claim credit for. The photo, taken by Ray Schofield, was of his friend's O scale 2-8-0. With Ray's consent I edited his photo in PhotoShop, adding smoke and steam. I then desaturated the colour from the shot and played around with the colour balance to...

    My freelanced railroad

Here's a shot I took this afternoon beside the "electrified" mainline on my NTRAK module. Smoky "diesel" exhaust effect created in PhotoShop. Gavin

    Track Painting

Tyson, I loved the scene in your photograph. The track/rails look VERY realistic - well done. Gavin
