    Big Bend

WOW! That's what N scale is all about. Long realistic trains; long realistic curves. What a wonderful "open" feel it has. I'm glad you resisted any urge to fill it with rails. Very inspiring (HO and O scalers, eat your hearts out). Gavin Miller

    Backdrop finished!

Haha, I must admit *I* wasn't happy with my first effort either. I got a bit carried away with the white spray can and WAY overdid the clouds - too heavy, too many (see my "tutorial"). It looked like a tropical storm brewing up! The good thing about this method is that it is so quick and...

    Backdrop finished!

Val, Nicely done! Very soft and nebulous. I am pleased my technique proved so successful for you. Go to the top of the class! :) Gavin

    First try... First Layout

Wow! VERY convincing scenery, weathering, weeds, rocks, culverts!!!!!!!!!!! You, my friend, have a flair for scenery/weathering. Are you a modeller from another field (eg military dioramas)? Gavin

    Pictures of my layout

Verne, Great modelling and great photos! Your weathering on the Kato Mike is especially inspirational. Well done. Thanks for sharing. Gavin

Building the 'new' Setagaya Japanese layout

Shite. Y'gotta love all that catenary above the 113 set!! Do the real E217s with double deck cars run through the subway (like Sydney's double deckers?) Gavin

Building the 'new' Setagaya Japanese layout

That sounds like a great idea! A visible subway is a project I have always dreamed of doing myself, so I am watching with interest. Gavin

Building the 'new' Setagaya Japanese layout

That looks like it's going to be a long escalator ride down from the surface Doug. Speaking of which, will you be modelling escalators / steps / elevators whatever? Looking great so far! Keep us in the picture. Gavin

    My freelanced railroad

Oops! I DID check it before posting it. When I clicked on it, it seemed to work. I'll change the address in my Favorites list.

    My freelanced railroad

... and here's one devoid of titles because it's centre panel has had to be replaced. (Actually, masked over while the weathering process was completed). You may notice that most of the cars' reporting marks have been faithfully cleaned of dust and grime by my N-scale railroad personnel...

    My freelanced railroad

This one's been to the paintshop more recently and had the railroad's more trendy "commercialised" shorthand titles (RailNet) applied.

    My freelanced railroad

Here are some shots of my hopper cars with different levels of weathering applied. Also different lettering to represent a mixed fleet of newer and older cars. Firstly, a car which has covered many thousands of kilometres and picked up a fair bit of dust. This one must be due for a repaint...

Building the 'new' Setagaya Japanese layout

Just starting a new business at the moment Doug, so doesn't look likely. See how busy I am in June. I am hoping to be "flat out" :) Gavin

The layout I made from The Box

Errol, Hey, that looks GREAT so far! I like the pleasing curve in the tracks at the front (rather than the usual more obvious but less interesting "straight" yard). Keep us posted with progress. Gavin

    @*?!^%& Microtrains couplers

He heh. I loved all those snarly faces in your post    Not laughing at you. Just empathising. Bin' there, done that! Good reason NOT to go to Z scale! MT couplers are fiddly, but they're still the best once they're on properly. Gavin

Doug, Can't wait to see subway trains running behind those windows in the frame. Gavin

    My freelanced railroad

Paul, Rest assured, it doesn't take "years and years" of experience to achieve half reasonable results. If you use the same techniques (or perhaps better ones you come up with by yourself) you should be able to "scenic" a stretch of track in one afternoon and be pleased with the results...

    My freelanced railroad

John, As Doug has mentioned they are made by Modemo. And yes, being Japanese, they ARE good runners. Mine run as smoothly as any of my flywheel equipped Kato locomotives and have excellent slow speed operation. The articulation is great! I have two at the moment and am thinking of...

    Can I come in?

Welcome to the Gauge MrBones. Newbies always welcome. Sounds like your mean ol' grandaddy shot HIMSELF in the foot by depriving himself of the real joy of model railroading, that is, sharing it with the kids/grandkids. He didn't realise what he missed out on! See...
