    Appreciating Wildlife

I dunno. My Friend who sent me this foto lives on the West coast, and said the sign was near Vancouver. Perhaps it's like a steak house here in California named Pinicle Peak --- which is a "branch" of the Arizona steak house named for an Arizona mountain. Oh, and by the way. I (and most...

    Appreciating Wildlife

Okay..... It's TOTALLY off subject. But I just had to share this billboard from the vancouver, BC area. Love that Canadian sense of humor.

    Great Northern G-3 4-8-0 Mastadon

The Southern Pacific had a bunch of twelve-wheelers too. The first is said to have been (Central Pacific) built in 1882, and more were built through 1898. According to the book, "A Century of Southern Pacific Steam Locomotives", forty of them survived in service on the SP until the 1940's...

    Track Gauges

Thanks Jesper & Vic..... I would think that the "excessive" gauge might be a problem for fine scale modelers, but probably less concern for those of us (I'm HO Std Gauge) who run the grossly overwide RP25 wheels. Jesper, you obviously know what you're doing, but you might consider doing...

    Track Gauges

Two questions, jkristia..... On their web site they say that the old rule about widening rails on curves (for which a 3-point gauge is necessary) is the bunk. Interesting. Have you followed their advice --- and found that they are correct? Also, in the past I always rather wished the...

    Does anyone hand-lay track?

Hand laying IS a whole lot cheaper. The first two layouts I built --- many years ago --- I hand laid track primarily because I didn't have much money. (HO --- spiked wood ties and pine roadbed.) My third layout, I used flex and commercial turnouts, because I felt more afluent, and figured...

Who or What Got You Started?

In 1948, when I was 14, I lived outside a small town in Oregon (Junction City) and in this small town there was a hobby shop where I spent a whole lot of time. I cannot imagine how the town supported the shop, but it was there. The owner had a figure-eight layout in the shop, probably...

A kitbash here a scratchbuild there

Great work. I'd be interested in any tips you might give us on working with steel --- as opposed to brass, etc. Bill S

    For our "Bean Counters"

This can get even further confused by the fact that not a few railroads, when interchanging with roads of different gauge, jacked up cars and ran trucks of whatever gauge they needed under them. So, at least on period layouts, it would seem that you could have narrow gauge cars sitting on...

    MDC 2 Truck Shay

For anyone wanting to work on / repower / detail an MDC Shay, I highly recommend "The MDC Shay Handbook" by Jeff Johnston, published by Oso Publishing (and I think also available through MDC). It's a very complete book, and I think would be a valuable tool for anyone with an MDC Shay. BillS

    Surgery and Recovery succesfull

Great news. But a note to EZDays..... You don't really think the insurance company has anyone (but their own) best interests in mind do you? I mean, before insurance companies were running medical care, he would have been in the hospital at least a week, perhaps longer depending upon how the...

    Surgery

All best wishes Dick. Every experience I've had with surgeons (broke my stupid neck in '72, a brain tumor the size of my thumb in '80, and then a little hernia repair a couple of months ago) taught me that they always want you to be "prepared" for the worst. It's as though they want you...

Updated: ~The Unofficial Gauge Page Members Links!~

Jon.... It hasn't anything to do with model railroading, but if you don't mind it being so far off subject, you can add my site about my grandfather.... http://hometown.aol.com/stoneexpl/AJSweb.html Bill S

    Working With Cardboard

Yup..... I too thought their prices were a bit wild. Don't know if anyone's paying that for them. It's the first time I've seen the ad, so they may be a brand new outfit. It'll be interesting to see if they last. And I totally agree that one of the reasons for using card stock is to save...

    Working With Cardboard

I just ran across an ad in the latest NGSL Gazette (pg 95) for a new company that is producing printed "Laser Cut Paper Craftsman Kits". In their photographs their RR depot and barbershop look pretty good. Also, they have "texture sheets" of shingles available in HO, but also coming soon in S...

    Working With Cardboard

Another good sealer that I have used successfully on card stock, is shellac. It's alcohol-based and dries hard. Applied to both sides it even stiffens the card stock a bit. It's also an excellent sanding sealer for wood. I usually brush it, but it can also be found in spray cans. Bill S

    Mantua/Model Power --- Hmmmmm

Model Power recently took over the Mantua line. For we who model old time HO, thats big news. I was interested in how they might be to deal with so I ordered some small parts from them (for the General 4-4-0) as a sort of test. I’m a little disappointed. Parts prices are quite high...
