    Designing Freight Yards

Very interesting article about yard designs. As the article shows, having at least one double ended yard track really helps in using a yard. Thanks for posting the article. Greg

    New loco photos

That 1734 turned out great Ray. I found your repower shots of the f unit of interest too. I've got a pair of F-9's that I want to kit-bash into an FP-7 and will study your frames for guidance. Thanks for sharing. Greg

Fallen flag cars in a train

We have a bunch of old covered hoppers in Sparks Nevada. They have build dates of 1963 and 1965. The road names are what you would expect, UP, SP and SSW. Yesterday I saw a CGW hopper, same one I saw a month ago, back in the yard. UP is digging up some old cars to cover the customer needs...

    Switch Lists

Hi Ted, I will try to answer your questions. If it gets more confusing then reask it and I will try to do a better job. :D >Is the track list generated by the industry and given to you when you make the pickup? No, the industry list is generated by the railroad. The industry calls the...

    Southern Pacific SD9E 4451

Excellent paint job. Yes that one and the 4450 were called Huff and Puff. They were used in the commute fleet by the SP before Caltrains took over. Notice they followed the famous SP 4449 steam engine in numbers. I don't know if SP did that on purpose but it was neat none the less. Greg

    RS-32 Project

Great job David. This is an ex-SP RS-32 at the Portola railroad museum. I'd say you hit the nail right on the head. Alcos are a favorite engine and your conversion makes me want to get out the razor saw and start hacking on my own. Cheers, Greg

    How young are you?

Glad to see the number of 21 to 30 yr old people is higher than I expected it to be. We had a discussion of the state of model railroading this weekend at O Scale West. The OSW has the same people there now as they did 15 years ago, they've just aged by that much. Greg Elems

Designing For Industrial Switching (2 Spurs Are Better Than One)

In Oakland California, the UP served a warehouse that took frozen chickens out of reefers and trans-loaded them into containers to ship overseas. We would spot two tracks of reefers side by side and they would unload the second reefer through the first reefer after it was emptied. We had four...

Designing For Industrial Switching (2 Spurs Are Better Than One)

Very nice modeling. Double tracks do make the industries look busier and increase the work. Nice division of car types too. Your layout is well thought out. Do you have a layout plan to show how this all lays down? Greg

    Switch Lists

Boy am I glad to see this forum. If I can indulge you MRR operators, I would like to post some comments on what we use on the UP. On the UP we have several versions of lists. One is a train consist list. Another is a track list, yard track or industry. And the third list is more of a...

    MOW Quiz

Isn't that one of the beasts from Tremmors? :D  :D Nice shot, have you seen one in action? I haven't, but heard that they are loud. Greg Elems

    What is it?

That is one of the SD60 Demo units. IIRC, the SD50's didn't have demo units. We had the demo units on the UP, December 1984 in Northern California. That paint scheme was modified for the 100 units BN leased from the Oakway Leasing, which also were SD60's. Sweet picture. Greg Elems

    'O' gauge track plan-critique requested

Aartwmich that is a nice layout. Since you will be using it with a Christmas tree, it will be fun to watch the train run through canyons of presents. Be sure to post some pictures as you build it. I don't think the grades will be a problem. The newer engines and easy rolling cars should do...

    Caboose Restoration

I spent yesterday putting couplers on the caboose. They helped quiet a bit in looks, IMHO. I decided to not replace the steps. I want to keep the feel of the first scratch built caboose I made. I will add windows and touch up the under frame with black paint. I like the back woods idea, and...

    Another area nearly finished.

Paul, Is that a Puma in your first picture? Sure glad your LPB's carry axes with them with that critter wandering around. Like everyone else says, fantastic job! Greg Elems

    Details, details, details...

Casey, I love the treatment you give your windows. The propped up sash and panes broken and shot out add that touch of realism that makes it look like a person will walk around the corner and ask what why you are there. The well placed tufts of grass and rusty drums remind me of my great...

    Caboose Restoration

I used Athearn O scale Arch Bar trucks. I substituted leaf springs for the coil springs and IM metal wheels for the plastic ones. Since it was a kit, the substitutions were a matter of using the new parts. Those trucks are really free rolling too. The basic truck kit was $5 plus $3 for the...

    Athearn Sold!

Sad to see Athearn sold, but maybe some good will come of it. Customer service has had its shortcomings of late. I too hope they continue their standard blue box fare for us kit bashing types. Greg
