Dash10, Do you have a larger version of that CNW 175147 hopper? I have a model of one that is real close in number and would like to use your picture to help weather it. Nice set of pictures, keep them coming. Greg

Finally, my first layout - any advice appreciated...

I think the less is more theory would work here. Being it is your first layout, I would avoid the reverse loop. It really isn't difficult to wire, but it can be frustrating. Keeping is simple and building on some basic track work to get trains up and running would keep the interest up too...

    small O layout

Drizzt, I built a small O27 layout on a hollow core door for my boys. I used a couple of O27 manual switches and made a small two track yard. They would rearrange the train and run it around the loop a few times and then use the yard to spot as an industry. It had a log loader. They ran...

well guys, i think this is about it........

Good advice, start small and work up. See if your local library has a copy of the John Allen book about his Gorre and Daphetid railroad. In it tells how he started small and it grew from a 4X8 layout, IIRC. For some train action, try making a small switching layout, with a run around track...

    cast flat cars-HO

Hi Steve, Thanks for the jog of the ol'e memory banks. :D I remember the thread, and it was for casting white metal. I also was able to track down the web page and re-save it, with the logging disconnects and flat car frames. With the recent resin casting article in RMC, a thread about...

    One of mine

Catt, A great start there. For good looking detail parts, check out Grandt Line detail parts. They have ladders, stirrup steps and brake wheels. Are you using the Bachmann standard, HO coupler height, or the On3 coupler height? Greg

    cast flat cars-HO

Thanks Bill for the tip on the search. I am looking for a specific thread I saw here a while back. The article in RMC is a good one and I will be reading up on what it has to say. Greg

    cast flat cars-HO

There was a thread about casting some HO flat cars. If I recall correctly, they became a kit. There was some pictures of how the first one was made and how they were going to be cast. For some reason rusty stump comes to mind on this. I've done a search and can't seem to find it. Does...

    Short sidings

Hi Larry and Andrew, Larry, we usually pulled the oldest cars from the siding, meaning the ones that had been there the longest. The way it worked when I was on the local, was fairly straight forward. We would put the cars in the siding from the east end on our way to Parr. The next night...

    Do NOT block Ulster Ave.!

UP rule book states that the crossing will be cut with at least 250' on each side of the crossing. Some times that doesn't leave much room for cars. :D Greg

    Short sidings

Larry, I've been working on the railroad 25 years now (WP/UP). I switch those very cars that are taken up to the siding. We need the room for other cars going out on the same local. You are right, it isn't cut and dried. We have limited room at Parr yard, on the branch, and it is quicker to...

    Short sidings

Why bother to drag those cars to the siding? One, space is limited in the yard at Sparks. Two, they are then held much closer to the industry that needs them, which leases the track for that purpose. Three, the local goes by the storage track 5 days a week anyway so dropping them off isn't...

    A switching question

Here is a real life John Allen time saver. This is the track layout on the Reno Branch at the old station called Panther. It has a small run around and a total of five switches, just about like the time saver. I point this out for two reasons. The small run around was used to put a tank car...

    A switching question

We shove cars several miles when we serve single ended industries in Reno. If we have a run around available then we use that and pull the cars both ways. It isn't so much making the shift longer, it is the new UP attitude about safety. We did things for years one way and had no incidents...
