    Santa Fe F7

An additional note about the Grand Canyon FPA4's. Part of their fleet, an A and B unit came from the Portola Railroad museum. They were operable when they arrived in Portola IIRC and need little work to get up to speed. At one time Portola had them and an ex-Long Island FA-1 which was an...

    Is this normal.

I don't think it was Photoshoped. I used to get that on some GE's when I would back off the throttle. The fuel was too rich for a moment after notching down. Other times it was too rich throttling up and yes some times it can be seen during the day that well. Greg

poll - modeling interests - locale

So where is the poll? As to modeling, I prefer the SP narrow gauge and Pacific Coast railroads. I guess you could throw in the N-C-O narrow gauge days too. One of my projects is of a Mexican narrow gauge caboose in On30. Colorado, not on my layout. :D Greg

    My Pictures

After reading this thread, I still believe that the hobby is in good hands. Great modeling and free spirit with a total enjoyment of your hobby. I applaud you daboonk for your modeling and sharing it with your dad. Greg

    Vintage Varney ID's?? EMD Ft's??

Those are F-2's or early F-3's. The F2 production period was 7/45-11/46 while the F-3 was 7/46-2/49. The three porthole side panels were used through the first few months of 1947. After that the two porthole side panels were used on the F-3's, some with the chicken wire screen and some with...

Fred, Great link, and interesting read. Thanks for posting it. Greg

    Santa Fe Freight Locos

Russ, my Santa Fe history is sketchy at best. IIRC some of the F-3's did go in for GP-30's. Also, any f unit that went into the CF-7 program came out as a CF-7 regardless of what it started as. Another thing I'm not sure about but seem to remember reading was the CF-7's came out as 1500 hp...

    Santa Fe Freight Locos

No need to apologize Fred. The CF-7 program went on for quite a while, since Santa Fe had a big fleet of f's to rebuild. Some of the F-3's went to EMD for trade on the GP-30's IIRC. The FT's were all gone by the time the CF-7 program started. Santa Fe even had F-9's that went into the CF-7...

    Santa Fe Freight Locos

When Amtrak took over, they used the red and silver F-7's till the arrival of their SDP40F's. At that time, Santa Fe got their f units back. They were put into freight service and many were repainted into several variations of blue and yellow. Some retained the silver and yellow replaced the...

    Low nose Geeps

Speaking of cheap shells, a friend of mine took a Tyco GP-20 and AHM GP-18 and made a low nose GP-18. It was close enough for a late model GP-9 that most people didn't know the difference and the rivet counters told to go get some decals and renumber it. :D I imagine the Tyco cab and nose...

    Four More Birthdays

Tanks a lot guys. :D :D As a matter of fact, I did get what I want for my layout. It is the new Atlas SW-9 in WP paint and O scale. Cool man cool. Cheers, Greg

    Caboose?

We had cabooses on the WP till the UP took over. IIRC it was around 1984 when the UP started using Flashing Rear End Devices, FRED for short. The caboose had an air gauge inside and valves to put the train into emergency if needed. The rear marker signified the end of the train. It was a...

    Prototype v/s supplied/ v/s detailed

Woodie, Nice job on the detail work. The little things sure do add up don't they. Those cars remind me of the HO Athearn streamliners, a bit short and short cuts taken to keep the price down. We have the same thing in S scale too. On the rest of the train, what are you going to pull it...

    Crandall Cabs

An interesting cab and unique to the CNW on the prototype anyway. That picture is on the dark side on my monitor. Any idea where there are some other pictures? A side view would help too. For a rough idea, use the trucks as a scale for guesstimating the nose length and how much was cut off...

    The Cambodian Railways

Great shots. Was this a special they were running? The numbering system is interesting too. Notice the 231.501? The 231 matches the number of axles on the engine, which would be called a 4-6-2 here stateside. The bridge is neat looking too. Did those gentlemen in uniform give you any grief...

Darn fine work there. But you lost me on the AMR reference. Greg

Two "High-water" Victorians from a "Painted Lady" (image heavy)

You have done an excellent job there. You captured the look of the older section of town in Sacramento. I remember seeing those buildings when I ran through Sac headed for Oroville. One thing I also remember was the Sycamore trees there. They were huge, towering above everything. Fond...

Oh Geez, another gauge to play with

Catt, I agree that the square cab will look better and the centered doors on the side will be an added improvement. A round edge on the cab roof where it meets the sides and ends would really set if off IMHO. Looking forward to seeing your results. Greg

    Your Favorite HO Scale Manufacturer?

While I haven't modeled in HO for years, I did own more Athearn than anything else. I did like the early Atlas, and have four Lionel U18B's. I took one Bachmann GP30 and repowered it with what else, an Athearn. When I left HO, Athearn was tops for quality and Atlas was just emerging and Kato...
