    Reason for MU'ed switchers

You've hit the nail on the head, visibility. Also if they are doing any mainline running having two engines is insurance that if one breaks down they can still keep moving and clear the mainline. Greg

    speed limits in yards

We have a yard speed of 10 mph with industry leads at 5 mph. In Roseville California, the yard speed can go as high as 30 mph. The yard actually has slow orders for some of their yard tracks due to track conditions. For the most part, on the UP we are restricted to 10 mph. Greg

Coupler setup on Bachmann On30 cars completely wrong!

Harold, Very interesting and thanks for scanning the article. I also like how the Accumate couplers look. No humungus spring on the side. :D Greg

    My Manual Turn-out Controls

That looks like a great way to power the frog for your intended route too. Neat idea and well thought out. Thanks for sharing. Greg

    something unsusal (?)

I believe you have found the Brooklyn Round House in Portland OR. Not only is the SP&S steamer there, that is the home of SP 4449 and Dole's PA-1 rescued from Mexico. Notice the NKP RSD5 sitting next to the F7? Yes quite a collection. Rumor has it they need to find a new home, UP wants to...

Southern Pacific 0-6-0 on display in Monteray, CA

Cool shots of your boy playing on the switcher. The city has cleaned it up and repainted it I see. I let my boys play on that about 13 years ago IIRC. Glad to see it still there for the public to see. That caboose looks like an old Sacramento Northern caboose. Originally it was a WP box car...

    locomotives running on 15" track

IIRC the 2-8-0 needs 18" minimum. Since I don't have any of those I can't say for sure. I do have the 2-6-0 and 15" is workable but tight IMHO. The smaller Porters will do 9" I've been told. Greg

    wooden hopper car

After rumaging through the pile out of the current box, I only found one issue. It was a four page article. I don't see any problem making copies for private use. So if you are interested in copies let me know at: gelems@sbcglobal.net Cheers, Greg Elems

    wooden hopper car

I just happened to come into several boxes of magazines. I may have a couple copies of that issue. Would you be interested in that issue? As for copying and posting, that was nearly 50 years ago. How long do copyrights hold for magazine articles? Greg Elems

    Bnsf 1082

Nice pictures of the 1082. My favorite paint scheme they've come up with to date. If that is the rear of the train then that is a DPU remote helper unit. Also sitting like that makes me think the crew died on the hours of service law. Greg

    mixed a and b units

As far as I know, ATSF F45's and FP45's weren't leased to Amtrak but the red and silver F7's were. Amtraks SDP40F's started showing up in the mid 70's which ended the lease of SP's SDP45's and ATSF F units. SP FP7's on the other hand were owned out right by Amtrak. Greg Elems

    Switch list question?

Ok, I'll grab some at work, since I can't seem to find the ones at the house. :( Anyway there are a couple different types of lists. I'm thinking you are interested in the ones we use to actually switch with. Basically the list tells you what's in the track and the order they are. Usually the...

    Switch list question?

Steve, Would you be interested in how we use switch lists at work? Greg

    mixed a and b units

WP routinely ran FTA/B-F3A lash ups. The Zephyr ran with FP7- F7B- F3B or two F7B's or two F3B's. Also WP ran their last four F7A's with just about any other engine on the railroad. They hauled switch engines to Oakland from Stockton and back with anything that was serviced and ready to go...

    Fast Tracks Jigs.

Jesper those are great looking switches. I did buy one of the jigs and the jig to file the rails to make the frog point. Probably the best $25 dollars I spent on that purchase. Now they sell a jig that not only helps you file the frog point but the same jig lets you make the switch points. I...

    Tie count

Before I got too involved in On30, I took the easy way out. I slipped about 1/3 of the ties off HO Micro Engineering flex track. At that time I just used plain jane HO switches and figured I'd bury them in dirt to hide the ties. Next time I'm rooting around in my boxes of old projects, I'll...

EMD F7 A-B units, Athearn Genesis or Proto 2000?

Russ, thanks for the clarification on the Athearn deal. I know the new f units from Athearn were a great improvement over their original Globe shells. Greg Elems

EMD F7 A-B units, Athearn Genesis or Proto 2000?

I’ve seen the Athearn F7 and heard the sound and I was impressed. They sounded like the F7's I used to work on and the ones at the museum. Make sure you aren't getting the blue box because that has the old shell with the rectangular windshield. Also I seem to remember reading that...
