    Patriotism in the hobby...

Hello csxengineer, I don't think I would enjoy throwing out all my American made stuff and boycotting anything made in America just because I live in Canada. I doubt whether the economies of Canada or America would be in the least affected if every Canadian did as you suggest and only buy...

    Bachmann next year

Hello Neil, She is seriously cute as you can see being dwarfed by the CN diesel. She runs like a swiss watch, a busy, delightful and willing worker and is worth whatever she costs. You will never regret a penny even though she isn't articulated and has funny couplers. Please excuse my crude...

    Bachmann next year

Hello Neil, Please forgive me but I find the idea of one geared logging locomotive 'mechanically making more sense' over another is somewhat hilarious. I grew up with a steady diet of Southern Region steam and have always marvelled at the clean and beautiful simplicity of Bulleid's designs. His...

Just curious, what camera are you using

No fair Shamus, The resolution for my monitor is 72 dpi. At that resolution my $20 credit card digital would be a contender. A 90 megapixel is equivalent to a 35mm. we aren't there yet but the new 40 mp cameras take great pics but are very pricey, but like all digital soooo cheap to run.

Just curious, what camera are you using

Since my last post The Hairy Otters have acquired some additional cameras. Starting with the most expensive. This one I have mounted on a swivel that is actuated by the bar on the following flat car. The camera leads into the corners and follows the train. We also have a couple of new...

Very Small Electric (Underground, Too!) Railroads

Hello HudsonE, Neat stuff. Underground trains are a special kind of railroad. I relied heavily on the tube in London when I worked in the city and have enjoyed Toronto's underground and Montreal's Metro. Montreal has surely the neatest, quietest and slickest system I have ridden and would...

    Station No. 3

Good one Mike, Let's hope your nice new emergency team never have to leave such a comfy looking home for anything more traumatic than a wash and polish.

    Logging Layout Track Plan!

Hello TC, Love it. But then why shouldn't I, you seem to have drawn a variation of my layout. In my case I think there is more track hidden than visible but there are few times when a train is hidden completely for long. I have essentially 5 major levels with 'Harriet' being the lowest. Here...

    Redesigning the Appalachian Central Yard

Hello Agatheron, Of course buying the software if you like it is the way to go but meantime if you have a layout designed that you want to save as a picture there is always the 'print screen' key. If you have a Windoze computer the screen will be saved in your clipboard and you just have to...

    Dollar Store Trailer Upgrades

In Canada I've seen wheat trains that were 2 km long but I hear they are running them up to 3 km these days. Do they have them this big down in the US?

Stand up, be counted and be proud, HOers!

They are not only half the length but half the width and half the height. That means we could fit 8 of them into the space that one of us takes up. Personally I'm glad that no '0'ers are here to try and make us feel small.

    New Portal and tree planting

Hello Don, Although it's quite pretty in bloom I think it is considered a weed as it seems quite prolific. I think there are quite strict rules about sending vegetation across borders so I hesitate to send you a bunch. I hope there are some modellers in Washingtom state or Oregon that could...

    New Portal and tree planting

Hello rdavies, Gee thanks, I hope you're inspired to seek some Hardhack and try making a couple. I have never modelled God's Wonderful Railway but I need to have a recognisable locomotive around for emotional reasons. The collection of geared loggers and Am. Std. 4-4-0 steam that run on the...

    Reversing Section Circuit

I showed this thread to a pal yesterday and he mentioned that if there is a rotary switch being used to assign cabs to blocks it would be a simple matter to use the extra poles to select the cab relay

    Reverse loop

Hello Mike. Thanks, as you say it looks good but unforunately there is a rather big flaw. This is a One Cab deal. For multiple cabs the whole system fails. I have come up with a solution in the Tech Forum under the "reversing section" thread that suggests rotary switch preselection. Please...

    Reversing Section Circuit

Hello Mike, Giving it some thought the best solution for multiple cabs is to add a rotary selector to interrupt the earth on the cab relays. This will mean that sometime before you switch the loop turnout you will have to select the appropriate cab. This won't require timing or resetting. I...

    Reversing Section Circuit

Hello Mike, I know nothing about tortoise motors but if they need a constant ON to work then you will need to buy another snap relay to actuate it. When you tap the momentary button the 3 relays will fire and the tortoise will be powered. If you have multiple reverse loops or wye's then you...

    Reversing Section Circuit

Hello Fifer, I posted an almost automatic circuit that allows drive on drive off loops in the H0 forum under the reverse loop thread. I say almost automatic because it requires you to push a button to throw your turnout points. All other functions are transparent. Cost approximately $10. If...
