    Track laying problem

If you solder your lengths of track together, you are heading for big trouble. When the layout gets warm your track will expand and lift. Just use regular rail joiners to allow for expansion & contraction.

    DCC and DC

You shouldn't try to sneak new equipment in to the house, you'll nearly always get caught! Instead, what you do is you buy her a little present and then announce that you got what ever you bought for yourself, which just happened to be in the window of the shop next door, but you only just...

    MRR Layout Database

A cracking idea. If MR say you can't use them, then I think all the members of this forum should send them an e-mail informing them of how by not allowing it, they are stifling the progression of the hobby.. :D

    Track laying problem

You can get track templates, I don't know how much they'll be in the States but their not that expensive in the UK. You use them to mark the track position and to get the right radius, then lay the flexi track. It is a whole lot cheaper than buying sectional track. Peco make a product called...

    Freight management software

I have been looking at a few bit's of software, but like ShipIt, they all seem a bit buggy, & I'm loath to part with cash that could be spent on the layout in a trial & error quest to find a good stable system.. Where can I find this Car Card and Waybill Generator program RevnJeff?

    New house new layout plan

Hi Bulldog. Have a look at my Railroad pages http://www.budgetwebsiteservices.co.uk/home/railroad/ I am having 'off scene' staging below the main layout. I haven't started building it just yet as I want to get a wooden floor down in the room first, but it might give you some ideas.

    fiddle yards

The idea of the fiddle yard being off scene, is to maintain the illusion of a miniature world without seeing what goes on behind the scenes. They are usually used in conjunction with boxes of extra rolling stock that won't fit on the layout. If you are lucky enough to have enough room to have...

Why not change your light bulb for a sub minature LED?

    Returning to the hobby.

Yes your completely right about the sizes George. I'm sort of err'ing towards using a smaller turntable. As you say, using the one that I would like to have used will take up 2 squares somewhere on the layout & I would only (if I'm lucky) get 1 line to run behind it. As it's only the one long...

    Returning to the hobby.

That would be why i don't have it then :D . It was more of a 'Will it fit' process as when I draw by hand I always draw the curves to tight. The only sectional track I ever use is the switches, everything else is done with flexi track. apart from anything else, it works out a whole lot cheaper.

    Freight management software

I was wondering if anyone here uses freight management software to operate the industrial side of their layout? I was thinking of using the tried & tested card & waybill system, but obviously software would be far more efficient as it would know where all of your cars are at any given time and...

    HO shelf/switching layout

That's a cracking little layout. I have been wondering whether to continue with my O-16.5 layout which sits on a 2' x 6' board, now that I'm starting an HO layout with my son, and after looking at this I think I won't bother. I haven't got much O-16.5 rolling stock at the moment & this Gum Stump...

    fiddle yards

A fiddle yard is quite a common sight on UK layouts as we seem to lack space. A fiddle yard is an off scene area usually at the back or at the end of a layout hidden from the public eye by scenery, where rolling stock can be changed over if there is not enough room to put all the stock on the...

Yard that needs to curve 90 degrees

Peco do curved points, although I don't know if you'll get them in code 83? They are on this web page about 1/2 way down http://www.hattons.co.uk/ProductList/category_list.asp?c=58

    Returning to the hobby.

Yes your right Triplex. Unfortunately, because Atlas don't do curved points, I couldn't put it where I really want it which is just at the top of the loop as at the bottom. I might just stick a LH switch in there for now as I have at the bottom. Triple switchback is good, as it allows for...

    Fitting track

I think underlay is much a personal preference. The two most common are cork and polystyrene. Personally I use cork. You can either fix the track with track pins or contact adhesive, obviously you have more chance of being able to move the track without damaging it if you lay it wrongly or...

    Returning to the hobby.

I think I have designed one that will do what I am after without being over cluttered. http://www.budgetwebsiteservices.co.uk/home/railway #3 is almost perfect (as far as I can see, but then I'm biased :D ) The only niggly bits are the passing loop on the left needs to be longer, unfortunately...
