Allen, my son is 10, and has had a crack at some soldering, this might be something for him to tackle, so far it has just been basic stuff.

Just an additional thought, the only issue I see is adding a $20 decoder to a $10 locomotive, but if he enjoys them then why not?

I think the Chattanooga Choo Choo is a great looking locomotive, I turned mine into a dummy loco. I believe IHC make a 2-8-0 that is the made from the old Tyco tooling and therefore is identical.
