    Benchwork in Progress

I think you're going to regret having legs that close to the edge of the benchwork. For the shelf type construction you have, you can angle them and tie them to a stud at the wall. See the 1st two pictures at http://mywebpages.comcast.net/jerryglow/construction_report/benchwork.htm

    Remote point operations...

One I've used with success (in HO) was a DPDT slide switch on it's side soldered to a plate so it could be mounted under the turnout. The handle was drilled vertically for a piece of music wire going up to the throwbar and cross drilled and tapped for a piece of threaded rod that joined a...

    Brick Moulding Stencil

I once saw an episode of Home Improvement where Tim had a gallon of paint custom mixed to what he called AL. It painted on plaid! Seriously, other than covering it with something, you're not going to paint it to represent brick. Some guys have expreimented with decals with a brick pattern but I...

    Source for cast window pieces?

I often have cut out the mullions in Grandt or Tichy windows and re-arranged them if the overall size is correct.

    Electro-uncoupling magnets

There was an article on building them around a piece of steel keystock and steel plates. They worked pretty good and you could leave them on for awhile (unlike Kadees) so you didn't have to push a button at an exact moment. Model Railroader, September 1976 page 80 Electromechanical ramp for...

    Operating sessions

To add to the "fun" (and some realism) try to run at least 1 less train than operators. Have a chalkboard or other means for a "mark in" list - you put your name on the bottom line after completing a run and cross them out as assigned.

    Forgotten Loco Addresses

That's why using the engine number is a good choice for address. Only problems are very low numbers and B-units that were often numbered xxx-B. For those I just use the actual number and add a (digit) 1.

    Operating sessions

I'd say get at least a couple you can expect to be regulars and train them. That way they can assist with the occasional visitor/operators. WARNING: this is not from experience as my own layout is far from done or ready to operate!

Prototype photos of 50' REA Reefer?

It's not really a Pennsy prototype: the closest it comes to is a PFE.

    Prototypical passenger questions (PRR)

If the cars are Branchline, they are correct - the manufacturer took pains to make them so even to what type air conditioning and trucks! As for A vs B units some roads purchased only A units while others had both. I model Missouri Pacific which had all 3 versions of the PAs but no B-units...

    Do you run "local" railroads?

My road (Missouri Pacific) was around when I first started modeling. Although I had been stationed in Missouri I didn't start following it until I had moved to California. Now I'm in Florida and still modeling it.

    What Happened to Kemtron?

Sorry I forgot the mix: I got it off one of the sites I visited on doing backdrops. I could read it off the can if you're interested. Actually the formulas were so old, the guy at the paint counter had to convert it. I think it came out a little light - dosen't show enough contrast for the clouds.

    dcc newbie question.

DCC control of turnouts is nice if you want to create a macro command to throw a series of turnouts to setup a specific route. I use it to select individual tracks in my lower level staging/reversing loops (can throw up to 3 turnouts with a single command). However, I will use conventional...

    Need help with decals!

Dry transfers esp with any variety or choice of style, are getting harder to find these days as the computer age has replaced the old "cut and paste" technology in "paste ups" in the printing industry. At one time, I had access to a vinyl cutter and was able to make signs in CorelDraw and have...

    What Happened to Kemtron?

I had a friend out in Southern Calif that worked for old Levon (Kemtron) the original owner. Terry said it was like an apprenticeship in the facets of modeling. He did everything from rolling boliers (for the old Wabash mogul) to "waxing" parts.

    model river shots

While we're on the subject of modeling rivers, I want to model a scene somewhat like: The "pea" or "river rock" is smooth and fairly uniform in color as you can see. Ballast of any sort is out of the question as being to angular.

Nice modeling Tad. The spark arrester/stack is available from Details West. What are the grills on your model?

A solution to that pesky ground foam...

Love it. A work train you can actually justifiably run! I remember seeing some on the MP back in Missouri and chased some on the UP out in Southern Calif. Sure makes an interesting train.

    Spansh Moss?

Only thing is I would make sure you "nuke" it or something to kill any parasites etc that may reside therein.
