    Please help!

I'm not too sure about the 3 rail system you mention, but it reminds me about 1991. I was 14 at the time and my Grandfather gave me his small collection of Hornby OO rolling stock and track. Even though I have moved to modelling HO I still have most of those old items that I keep under the...

How Do You Name Your Railroads?

This is a very interesting thread. Being in the UK, the only fictitious railways could only be based on preserved or small, privately operated lines away from the main rail network. But since the advent of the privatisation of British Rail in the 1990's, there have been many train operating...

    HO Scale Intermodal Crane

Well, I went to the national exhibition at the NEC at the weekend and saw the crane being demonstrated on the Heljan stand. Wow, it was fantastic! I'm hoping that my numbers come up on the premium bonds now!!!

How many of you have done this???

I was chatting to one of my society colleagues at a national exhibition last weekend and he told me his wife will kill him if she found out how much he was spending at the trade stands! I guess I will never have that problem with my fiance as she spent more of my money than I did at that event!!!

How many of you have done this???

Well at first my girlfriend didn't seem keen about it when I told her what my main hobby was (I have several!). While on a camping trip together back in the summer I thought it would be a good idea to visit a shop in the area that I had always wanted to visit, so I decided to take her along...

    Hmm, a R/C container forklift..............there's a thought!

    Airbrush

I have a Paasche single action airbrush that I had given to me by a body repair contractor working where I used to work in a vehicle management job. He told me that a colleague got it for an interior paint repair on a car, and never used it again. Great! Now I, too have a question: I purchased...

    HO Scale Intermodal Crane

Ah yes, it's the new container crane from Heljan. It's a bit blinkin' pricey for me. Still, at least for the projected container terminal on my layout, a Kalmar Contchamp from Kibri won't drain my bank balance - or take up as much space for that matter!

    New Here

I got my girlfriend into model making and now she keeps asking me when are we going to the hobby shop again?! Definately nothing like getting the missus involved!!!

    Model RR Shows

Huh? FOUR hobby shops in your town?! The nearest hobby shop to me is 12 miles away, and I live in a big town! Anyway, I can't wait for December the 2nd and 3rd to go to the biggest event of the year here in the UK!

    Tri Axle Dump trucks?

Off the top of my head, Norscot makes a Caterpillar dumper at a reasonable price. For a bit more money, I believe that Motorart do a similar example by Volvo. I'm not too sure about exact prices or availability, but I'm sure someone who does will come along! Hope that helps, Al.

Question, which Kiln enclosure to model?

Hmm. I would say go with the first one, but keep it in a more neutral colour to give it a more industrial look.

    Building roads for HO

I just use dark grey undercoat paint and tissue paper. I simply put paint down in the desired area and then carefully spread the paper on top of it. The paint soaks through and when dry, the joins become barely noticeable.

    Vintage Kit(s)

All this makes me wonder if old, unmade kits like these are worth keeping as they are, or just built anyway? I found an old Faller kit dating from what I would presume would be the 1970's and just built it. I wonder now if the kit had become rare and would be a collector's item as it was still...

What mistake have you done and what have you learn about it.

For me it would be getting loads of OO scale rolling stock while modelling HO road vehicles and scenery. I now look more closely at items I find and have to make extra sure they are adaptable. Some would say that they are to the same scale, but it would take a lot to convince me nowadays!

    Local train show finds

When I go to exhibitions and swapmeets I now always ask what's the best price the vendor can do for me if I get several items. A few pennies saved here and there soon adds up!

    What If.....

I would still stick with HO. After all, it has the biggest range of accessories available and as I model a lot of road transport, I find HO scale has to be the best catered for.

    HO scale road vehicles

Maybe I could have got them as my fiance is a big fan of those. Since I introduced her to 1/87 scale modelling, she has begun to amass a collection of her own. Nothing like getting the missus involved, I say!

    Modeling style?

I do it either way. Sometimes I would install the track first and then build around it if I have a good idea of where I want things to go. Right now, I am working on a diorama where I have started to make the buildings before I have even built the baseboard. This is because I can position the...

    Tips on Ballasting

Yep, a 50/50 mix of water and PVA wood glue works fine. I have also added a drop or two of washing -up liquid to the mix, as that helps to break down the surface tension of the water.
