Getting power from the front engine of an artric

I want to build a HO model of a RGW 2-6-6-0 but I am a bit stumped when it cames ot a way of getting weight from the boiler onto the front engine. I want it to be articulated in the protypical manner, i.e. the rear engine is connected to the boiler and the front engine pivots from the front...

    John Allen's Gorre and Daphetid

That book is absolutely fantastic. I borrowed that book from a friend when I was starting in US railroading. I have since bought my own copy. I think John Allens' stuff is some of the most beautiful modelling ever done. It doesn't conform to modern fashions but it is still the best in my...

    Keystone Shay NWSL upgrade

Gear honing I have just used some Brasso to hone a brass-brass worm-gear set. I worked a treat (and the gears are all shiney!:D ) I assembled the gears, motor and etched gearbox. There was a bit of a sticky bit on the gear so I put some Brasso on with a piece of tissue. I turned the motor...

    swimming loco

That is just a cheap fake made using a MDC 0-6-0 with the slope back tender and some really skillful use of acrylic gloss medium for the water then put through GIMP or photoshop to make it look like an old photo :p :p :p just like that famous "loch ness monster pic" this is also a fake...

Passenger Service for Jon & Shamus

Are you kidding! I bet you they tricked out that beast with overhead cams and and a bigger carb. It must generate at least....50bhp.....:p If they do decide to pull the caboose I hope they upgraded the brakes from the two wheel drum brakes or whatever the original car had.

What do you know about Hornby Hobbies?

Actually - given that the loading gauge is smaller in the UK the american HO and british OO scale stuff is about hte same size (the OO is a bit bigger but not much). If you get the ready to run stuff that is 16.5mm gauge rather than the (nicer - better?) kits that frequently run on 18.83mm...

    I hate daylight savings time.

When you are at higher latitudes (Glasgow is 56 degrees north but that is only about 1/4 of the way up scotland) you do actually need daylight saving. What we don't really notice is; although the days are getting longer in spring the time the sun rises in the morning is still getting later...

    Need help levelling track

If you want some cheap and dirty russian engineering input you could try putting a small block of hardwood on the top of the rails that are too high and hammering (eek!) them. This will deform the fish plate and force the taller rail down until the heads are at the same height. I am saying...

    nominal driver sizes

Are teh wheel sizes for standard gauge of narrow gauge? I am guessing that they used smaller wheels on narrow gauge as I have plans in the Feb 1996 MR that shows a 3foot gauge class-C climax with 29 1/2 inch wheels but my HO scale bachmann shay has 33 inch wheels and my steam locomotive...

What do you know about Hornby Hobbies?

Hi Javier, If you think about it all the scales we use are stupid but 4mm = 1 ft makes more sense than 3.5mm - 1ft! After all - 4mm=12" gives 1mm = 3" so scale rulers would be a lot cheaper! 3.5mm = 1 ft doesn't go into anything! that works out as 11.6mm = 1m or 0.2916mm = 1 inch. At...

    The gatter

i just had an image of a mini scene - A man with a top hat and a twirly handlebar mustache (typical 1920s film villan) about to feed a damsel in distress through your venetian gatter with the hero riding to save her (on a shay? probably faster to walk:) )

    ho "climax style sideframes"

They are actually Westside logging side frames - they look a lot like climax side frames though which must be how I remembered them. The bad news is that they HOn3 and designed for 26" wheels so are too small for standard guage purposes :( they are part numbers 585-31830 in the 1998 walthers...

    ho "climax style sideframes"

sean, Presicion Scale do make some side "Climax" frames however the ones i've seen were climax log car side frames which, although similar, are not quite the same as the loco ones. I'd really like to see a pic of you climax with side frames on krokodil neil

What do you know about Hornby Hobbies?

They are quite pricey just now so I don't see how they will go up too much. Remeber you are getting clobbered by the weak dollar at the moment - it is a great time for me to order stuff from Walthers just now:D :D :D edit By the way - I think the reason they want the slot car stuff is that...

What do you know about Hornby Hobbies?

Upon reading the news item I came to the conclusion that Hornby will still produce the Electrotren model railway stuff. I don't know if you North Americans know much about Hornby because thier own brand stuff is nearly exclusively British outline, however you could think of them as being the...
