I LOVE the headlight in the middle of the bonnet of the UP van. For us steam guys it's a bit more difficult! Time to make a Stanley Steamer I think...

A Layout in progress w\ pix

It looks good if you ask me. if you are worried about it taking up too much space then remember that when it is raised up to operating height it will look smaller because you can see underneath it and you can use the space under it to store things. My layout is nearly 5 feet off the ground and...

    Dunkirk arrives

Ah - I went and looked at the boulder valley web site and see the side frames are part of the kit :)

    Dunkirk arrives

That photo is much clearer. Thanks! I've seen a couple of photos on the gearedsteam website but they all suggested that you could see through the loco at floor level between the doors. It's a gorgeous model - did you make the truck side frames or are they commercial parts? neil

    Dunkirk arrives

That's brilliant shamus. Can I ask - is the lump in the middle where the motor for the SW is protypical? I know the dunkirks had their engine there, like class A climaxes, but did it look like that in real life? If it did then I would consider building one of those in HO Cheers, Neil

    Pipe loads?

Metal finish pipes of a large diameter could represent the outer, steel shell of composite displacement piles. They are driven into the ground with a cone on the end that displaces the soil to the side. When at the right depth the steel tube is filled with concrete to make a pile for a...

    weathering the rails

You should avoid a really rusty colour as that only occured on disused lines. The trains left plenty of oil on the rails. I use a dark brown for both the sleepers and the rails that seems to work fne but if I could be bothered I'd paint the rails a dark brownish gray.

    ho "climax style sideframes"

Hi climax fans. I was looking at the website for my local american model railway shop and saw that he has been told that the Bachmann Climax is arriving on the 30th of July. :) It is unlikely that it will arrive on time though. :(

    What's next for EMD?

If you look at old pictures of the Union Pacific or Cheasapeake and Ohio you can see 7000hp locos! :D :D :D

    Flextrak vs Snaptrack

Flexi track is better because you are not trapped in a predefined track geometry. Flexitrack allows you to have easements, where the radius of the curve increases to the maximum curvature over a car length or so rather than slamming straight into a corner. It requires a bit more time to lay...

picking a high end brand of track

By the way, Microscale track is fantastic if you can afford the extra price but it still has plastic sleepers. And Peco is the only company I am aware of that sells track with concrete sleepers if you are modelling the modern era.

picking a high end brand of track

Peco points are unusual in that all the turnouts have teh same diverging angle (12 degrees if i remember). The difference is the radius that the diverging route goes through as it diverges. Small radius have 60cm radius diverging routes, medium radius hae 90cm radius, and large radius have...

Looking for a tiny tiny Chain

Do they need to be working? It might be easier to do if the axles were powered via gear boxes rather than the chains and th chains were just along for the ride as with the MDC Shay line shaft. Maybe you should suggest it to Bachmann. When they eventually get the Climax out they will be in...

    Finished my first Jordan kit.

The Jordan kits are great! I have about a dozen but need some more. If you are worried about messing it up just don't do what I did - I have one of the 1904 Oldsmobile curved dash cars. It was on the edge of the layout and got knocked off. It was fine after the fall but then I didn't...

    Gas electric

I'd have thought that so long as the voltages and AC/DC are the same you'd just wire up the generator to the battery terminals. If it goes backwards in forward gear then swap the wires. It would probably be good if you could wire the generator start switch to the on key on the buggy but that...

    Entering the world of DCC

The IHC locos shouldn't be a problem because the frames are plastic so the motors are already isolated. They are on my 3 2-6-0's 4-8-2 and 0-4-0T anyway.

    Old Danish steamer.

I love the outside stephenson valve gear. It would be murder to model in the smaller scales though! The lump on the back of the steam dome is probably a sand box but don't quote me on it. neil
