    Starting a logging railway

Hi Conor - if you are not in the USA and use a different voltage where are you??? I am in the UK where we use 230V so I buy all my mains powered stuff here to aviod all the problems with voltage. What voltage do you run at? I would assume something near 240V at 60Hz. The 115V stuff runs on...

    Question about flex track

Yes. Yes and yes you don't have to solder the rail together straight away. Railjoiners work fine until you ballast the track and glue gets in them. I waited until I had all the track on my layout in place and working before i soldered it. This gave me a chance to check it all worked and...

    Starting a logging railway

glad I could help. This is a great forum for getting help but be aware that everything said is just someones opinion and it can be wrong. Sometimes they don't read the question properly ( I have just read you thread on flexitrack :) so you know what i mean :D ). If you need any help drop...

    Question about flex track

When you curve a piece of flexitrack (as we call it over here!) the rail on the inside of the curve protrudes from the end of the section of track because it is going round a curve with a smaller radius so the 36" length of rail gives a longer arc. Net result being; ----------- rail...

    Starting a logging railway

Welcome to the gauge :) I am more of a steam man than diesel however from what I have gathered over the years; If you want a diesel loco for a logging layout in the 60's/70's the type of thing you are after would be a second hand switcher or first generation GP bought from a larger...

    Cable cars in Layout

I don't see why not. In some respects it would be easier than trams because the cars are not sefl powered. Bachmann makes an electrically powered san fransisco cable car that you could butcher

    Chapel car...

It's not quite a church on wheels but I have plans to make a model of something even better! A mobile whore house :) It is based on a MDC 50' coach and done in red and yellow. I haven't made it but maybe I'll get round to it one day. I don't know of a prototype but if they did exist it...

    Garahbara gets moving

Remeber that the Aussies drive on the correct side of the road, the same as us. So it is not suprising their trains do too. By the way GO LEFT HANDERS!!!! from a confirmed southpaw

    Spectrum Shay Min. Radius

13-14 inches is pushing it too far for the three truck shay if they are curves on which the entire locomotive will sit at once - i.e. not very short kinks. I think the MR magazine review said 15" was the minimum for that loco. The problem is the line shaft on the right side of the loco...

    Bachmann Climax!

Close examination of the photo of the bottom of the loco seems to suggest that the Stephenson Valve gear works as per the shay :) :)

    Bachmann Climax!

I don't know how many of you have already seen this but Bachmann recently (19 Oct) put up pictures of their HO scale Climax. Here's the URL if you haven't seen this; http://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/gallery/album21 It looks so good. I'm going to put mine on back order at the LHS...

Ordering from Caboose Hobbies to UK. Success?

Ordering from Caboose Hobbies. Success? Hi all, I am thinking about ordering a couple of used brass locos from Caboose Hobbies and was wondering what experiences others have had. I would welcome replies from everyone but I live in the UK, which adds another layer of complexity :( How...

    Whimsical Notions

I have a shop on my layout called 5 Points Imports, which is a front for an interplanetary smuggling ring in the book: Price of the Stars. I am also in the process of building a bakery run by Bestiality Carter, from the Terry Pratchett books. I have built a "Ruptured Duck" style rail car...

    Metal Casting Detail Parts Question

you can solder white metal with a temperature controlled soldering iron and low temp solder however for scenic detail parts rather than bits that are going to carry a load (e.g. locomotive kits) it is probably not worth the bother. Super glue or epoxy.

    Control Panel Layout

Hi woodie, With crossings (crossovers are two points facing each other on dual track lines that allow trains to get from one track to the other but not in all four possible ways, only two) it is usual to represent them as an X. Doulbe slips have an X with a ^ and an upside-down ^ drawn just...

DC because I'm cheap :) and I run the trains by myself. I am considering DCC for the sound aspect though

Train show - DC part 4 of???

hi woodie, The front two tracks are the east and west mainlines and the rearmost track is the branchline. The mainlines cannot have a hill and have a minimum radius of 22" or something. The branchline can have a hill of 1.5% and a minimum radius of 18" so it can provide some visual...

    Frog on Peco turnouts

a fair bit is fine because the conical bearings mean the car always sits straight. if they are nearly falling out then that can screw it all up a bit. if you are not having problems then you are fine :)
