the dust is probably silica gel. It is used to absorb moisture. DON'T PUT IT ON YOUR CLIMAX! It is not good for mechanical parts. I wish mine would arrive. It should be here in a week or two. grrrr

    Colorado Logging

Thanks you two. Summit, that is just the sort of information I am after. I model standard gauge but as sumpter says, there are no rules. I intend to have a fair number of mines too but I had an idea for a logging branch and wanted to know if it would be appropriate. I'm pleased it is. A...

    Colorado Logging

Does anyone know if there was any large scale commercial logging in Colorado in the 1920s or before? I am modelling a common carrier railroad in 1926 that does a bit of logging on the side (on branchlines). I had decided on setting the railroad in Washington but I have also been looking at...

    Motive Power

The modern locos are so much nicer out of the box that I would be very tempted to go with that idea :D I don't know if it would fit oyur era, but the modern Spectrum steamers are very nice and reasonably priced to boot!

    Let's talk about smoke---

I've seen smoke units on exhibition layouts here in the UK, Black smoke doesn't look good but I have seen gray smoke that is quite nice. The problem is that the smoke is not ejected with enough "vigour" or in sufficient volumes to look very realistic.

    Benchwork constuction for foam??

Hi Val, My layout has a 2 foot by 3 foot grid of 1/2 inch by 3 inch pine on edge on 2' centres and flat across the way with the foam sunk into the grid, flush with the front and back. I use the white bead type of foam as I couldn't get the extruded type. It has joints in it because it...

    Rail Truck

Hi, this one is HO standard gauge but it runs! It is supposed to be a weed sprayer. I put a small open frame motor in the tank that powers the back wheels. It has six wheel pickup. It runs a bit too fast but I intend to change the motor and gearbox for one with a 38:1 reduction. Neil

    Starting a logging railway

Hi, So you are in Ireland eh? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO don't buy from the states as it takes ****ing forever to arrive and you have to pay VAT and shipping (the standard charge for Walthers stuff overseas is $20 plus 20% of the order value! ) I get my stuff for Macs...

    Nice 4-4-0 American?

IHC is all right - i have a number of their locos and while not over detailed they run alright. Their loco used to be sold by Rivarrosi in less gairish colours for 3 times the price! The motor is in the tender and connected to the loco by a drive shaft between them but it doesn't look too bad...
