I still think your not giving around the walls enuf thought. First how tall are you? If your over 6' tall you can make the layout sit rather high and then have TONNES of space under the layout to store anything you need. However its your layout and your home so its really all up to you but i...

If you have no real connection to any tiny gauge scale On30 or HOn230 or whatever they are then why not just stick to HO scale. Now on the topic of another loop If you were able to use the closet for that return loop I could fit one in. However I would need to know where the closet sits...

Ok so as long as im not going to go under the 2" mark of the foam I dont need anything under it. Hmmmm care to tell me how to attach the foam onto the 1x4 grid? And yes the front edge will have a nice Facia to hide the 1x4 and the foam board.

Not really I think Im going to build this shelf layout and give foam a try. Its just going to be a switching area so i dont really need elevation change.

What about the walls around the garage? You can get a lot of railroad in an around the walls "U" shape that is on an 18-24 inches wide shelf. You could then park the car in the center.? Why dont you give us the Area you have to work with and the area you need for your car to fit into. If you...

im going to build 1x4 box frame on 16" centers going from 1' at the narrow end to 3' at the wide end. Its about 11' long as well. Id like to use 4" thick foam board. SO do I need to put down 1/4" plywood under the foam and then glue the foam down?

Ya the guy sounds like this is the only spot for a layout. I would suggest not parking in the garage and making the layout perm rather than thinking youll be able to lift it up to allow the car to pull in. A layout bigger than a 4x8 is gonna be hard to lift up. Heck even a 4x8 is not gonna be...

I know what your saying about table tops they can be very nice and im thinking now about just doing a smaller top level switching track puzzle with staging in the back to start. I have tonnes of switches and flex track mix of Atlas code 100 and shin/wathers code 83. May even try blue or pink...

naw...table top layouts are not the best for elevation changes and limit what you can do as for looks.

Ya it gives you so much more to do with useing the same area. I tell ya 10 years ago when I was on my way out for a hobby break Helix and 2 or even 3 level layouts was what the future held and now Im back and everyone is still playing around with table tops. STaging at both ends of your...
