    RS 1

From the size of the fuel tank, I'd actually think that might be a RSC-3 rather than a RSD-3. The RSC has A-1-A trucks, and is for lightweight rail on branchlines, while the RSD has C-C trucks(6 powered axles) and was the Alco equivalent of a SD7 or SD9. Oh, and for the fellow who said the...

    Newbie need 4x10 track plan

A nice little trackplan is the Midland, IL Plan in Tony Koester's Realistic Model Railroad Operations. As it builds out to closer to 4'x8.5', you'd only need to add a few 9" straights to get your 4'x10'. A plus is that it's designed to allow operations. With DCC and the optional tracks, it will...

    new to model trains

O Scale is fairly Kid Proof so it may suvive 2 large dogs (Anything smaller won't). Note that O is a Scale and a Gauge (Distance between rails), On30 is O scale, 3 foot gauge(Rails are 3 scale feet apart, or 3/4" apart) and 1/4" scale is another name for O Scale. So O scale buildings et al...

    Track

I've got a decent amount of Profi-Track (Fleischman also makes standard sectional Model Track in the same sizes as it's Profi-Track) (A+B Start Set, C and F set plus a bit of extras). It's very good track, but I've had a few problems with the curved turnouts (Because they are very tight radius...

    Couplers

Kadee's are your solution. #5's for the rolling stock, and check http://www.kadee.com for information as to which ones to choose for your Heavyweights and Athearn Loco's. You'll want a Height gauge as well.

    Couplers

The plastic knuckle HO couplers tend to fail quickly, although the Accumates are much better than the EZ-Mates. Converting to Kadees improves coupling performance anyways (Only Kadees will reliably couple on curves.)

German Model: All she needed was a little lovin'

The 3 rail stuff is AC, 2 Rail is DC. The Stud/Switch is used in combination with a contact treadle/guard rail to activate accessories, usually signals. The european manufacturers are fairly big on active signals. Fleischman uses a rectangular sprung slider for AC 3rd rail pickup. The other 2...

    layout

That's a great starter table, I've seen at least one incredible layout in an even smaller space (60"x48"). If you've got the other half, keep it around for expansion, as 5x9 gives you a lot more options than 4x8 does.

    Easy to assemble tracks

Yeah, EZ-track does have most of the market here in North America, it's practically the only American HO track with roadbed I can find (I can get Marklin & Fleischmann track easier than True-Track or Unitrack). I still wouldn't recommend it, since the Atlas True Track can be converted into...

    Easy to assemble tracks

Personally, I use Fleischmann Profi-Track. Upsides: Extensive, well designed selection, indestructible (You can jump on it and it survives) compatible with standard track (With or without adaptor piece) everything is designed to fit a grid, so track planning is a cinch. realistic...
