    Scratchbashin' DPM's "Freight House

Back in early June, I began a "scratchbash" project using DPM's ubiquitous HO scale Freight House kit. The object of the project was to see if I could take an ordinary kit, one which isn't normally considered to be "finescale," and turn it into something that approached "finescale" when...

    On-line Scam!

For whatever this info is worth... Last week I received an "official notice" from Earthlink that my account information was no longer current and that I needed to click on the link to update my account. The notice was sent as an html document with Earthlink's corporate logo and content...

    Stone Walls

Phillip, this thread is very interesting. Thanks for the tips and photos. Since you're using Sculpey to seal the bottom, are you also using it to carve the master wall sections?

    Clickable Trackplan

It works for me, Paul. That's a pretty neat idea.

    Home Cut Lumber

My friend Rusty Stumps (who is also a Gauge member) has been cutting his own stripwood. He uses a 9" bandsaw and a "thickness sander," which he built himself, that can be micro-adjusted. He recently sent me several bundles of his stripwood that ranged in size from scale 12x12's on down to 2x4's...

And here's the same tank after some additional detailing and weathering with alcohol and Dull-Cote:

    Testor's Dullcote, substitutes?

But there can be times when the reaction between Dull-Cote and alcohol can be put to good use. In the photo below, I deliberately dribbled alcohol on the tank after spraying it a few minutes earlier with Dull-Cote. I wanted the appearance of lime and hard water deposits on a rusty old water...

    Been Havin' Some Troubles

Charlie, my friend, you will be in my thoughts and prayers, of course. But just as important as that is your positive attitude. That, as much as anything, will help you get through this challenge. I know that as an excellent model builder you won't be sitting still too long. And that On30...

    California Fires

The older of my two daughters got married two weeks ago. One of the bridesmaids in her wedding works as a Hazardous Materials Specialist for the San Bernardino Fire Dept. I just got an email from her this morning. (I've known Kristen since she and my daughter were in first grade.) For the past...

    newest scratchbuild in progress

In this second photo, with the structure on the left, I applied it to each entire strip on the roof, so they are lying quite a bit flatter.

    newest scratchbuild in progress

Thanks, guys. You are correct, Pat. Another contributing factor to the "warping" is applying the glue only to the top edge of the strip instead of the whole strip. You can see the difference in these two photos. In the first, I applied the glue stick only to the top edge.

    newest scratchbuild in progress

Since the subject is tar paper... Here's a photo of a "tar paper" roof on a structure that I'm currently scratchbuilding for a freight house diorama. Because it's an old structure, I wanted the roofing to appear heavily weathered and deteriorated. Jon mentioned "cheap construction paper,"...

Waitin' For The Line To Clear

    Was forum down?

It's been down since last evening. I discovered it right after reading about the hacker hitting The Gauge. I've sent Joe a coupe of emails about it, but I don't know if he's been able to get them.

    Doubleheaded Erie Berkshires

Gary, your detailing and weathering on locos just blows me away. You do excellent work! But even Marty's unweathered one is good looking. And Blake's is outstanding also. Wish they all belonged to me... ;) :D
