Anyone using Central Valley Tie strips?

Gee squid I had no idea... was that on your current layout? sign1 (little poke at squidbait as we have been buddies for years) anyway I did notice that one of the tools they list in their instructions is a needle that is to be mounted in your pin vise... I would guess you have to then heat...

Anyone using Central Valley Tie strips?

Just wondering who is using the Central valley tie strip product and what they like or dislike about the product. Interested in information on both the turnout strips and the mainline / branchline tie strips. I like the way they look but am wondering how much extra work is involved. Is it...

Squid had done a few custom installs with great results so he may be able to give you some pointers.... the ACL Russian Decapod he did for our demo layout sounds awesome and always gets peoples interest.

How do you find the Bachmann GP-50 (Southern)?

You are half right... they wont sell wholesale to anyone without a retail store but they most certainly do sell retail direct to consumers on their website at Horizonhobby.com... but the prices are such that you can often do better buying from your local hobby shop I own a store and have been a...

What type of road bed do you use?

slightly off topic but not really.... is everyone using fine needle nose pliers to drive the spikes or are you using some other tool?

What type of road bed do you use?

I had a chat with the folks at WS when I was at I-hobby expo weekend before last about using their foam roadbed for hand-laying.... the guy I spoke to said "sure no problem" and that he was a model railroader. Curious about 2 things: 1. Has anyone actually tried to hand-lay on foam roadbed...

How do you find the Bachmann GP-50 (Southern)?

As Squid noted that does seem odd. We are a Horizon dealer in Canada (the one he mentioned might be able to help out) and there is nothing to stop retail customers from ordering directly from Horizon as long as they are willing to pay the advertised price and the shipping using their online...

    MRC "Sounder" Install??

Have to agree with Squid on this one.... I tried to work with both a standard and a brilliance decoder in my P2k 080..... it was impossible to get the loco to run properly and even at the max setting the chuff rate was still not synced to the drivers and as I recall the only way they would take...

Tetter's Layout Progress and Other Pics.

Well I just read through this thread and you have almost convinced me to hand lay.... and as Squidbait can tell you I am not easily convinced.... now I just need to get my son and his wife done school and out of my basement so I can start building :) oh well in the meantime I can tweak the...

    It begins...

I have to agree with Squid on this.... unless there is some physical obstacle stopping you from going around the outside of your area a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood in the middle of your room with 1" aisles offers much less visually and operationally... and wont allow others to enjoy your trains with...

much adeiu about nothing... or a 14' x 15' loosely based on FGLK

Grades will be .....ooooh... about that much. given the equipment I am running and the room available the run down to staging I will have to play with this but for all visible sections it should be right around 2.5 - 3%.

much adeiu about nothing... or a 14' x 15' loosely based on FGLK

wow lotsa questions  minimum radius during planning was 20" and I dont think I have anything under 21. My largest steam will be a heavy mike. in terms of the some of the other comments... well here is my latest revision. The area on the lower blob now allows me to model one of the...

much adeiu about nothing... or a 14' x 15' loosely based on FGLK

Yes the staging under the layout is "through staging" consisting of 3 tracks capable of holding a 25 plus car train. The way its set up I can run a train on the main continuously while switching the yard or the upper branch all without fouling the main.

much adeiu about nothing... or a 14' x 15' loosely based on FGLK

After many kicks at the proverbial cat and much thought about whether or not to post my efforts may I present my humble layout. Hoping to start construction before the cold weather ends... still have a few minor givens and druthers to iron out but the basic plan should remain intact. Loosely...

    kitbashed Ertl/RDA mill

funny you should ask.... I am currently in progress on a DPM and scrapbox kitbash of a pickle factory.... It is completly unprototypical and a flight of fancy but hey I am having fun. The parts are all flea market and scrapbox treasure as I am tired of putting all of my structures on our stores...

    Which do you prefer??

I think the guy that installed that backdrop did a superb job Squidbait.... and if its the same guy who built the mill complex and weathered the flat car in the foreground he must be a master model builder or something  hehe
