HO paper models that I made :)

I used Inkscape, a vector graphics editor similar to Coreldraw. The big difference is that Inkscape is free. :) The freight house is based on a prototype drawing and a picture of another freight house, both of which can be found in Model Railroader's How To Build Realistic Layouts (Industries...

    Smallest Possible Oval Layout?

In the April 2008 issue of Model Railroader, they featured a railroad that took only 28 inches by 94 inches (or 2'-4" x 7'-10") of real estate. I think it was a work of art and wonder. You could even still reduce the length, I think. The minimum radius was 12", and the minimum turnout is...

Is there a shop that accepts PayPal and can ship to the Philippines?

Yes, ebay is attractive. :) I'm just wondering if there are hobby shops that accept Paypal. But I guess Ebay is the best option.

Is there a shop that accepts PayPal and can ship to the Philippines?

I'm wondering if there is such a thing as a model railroad shop that accepts paypal and can ship to the Philippines. We're a bit wary in giving our credit card numbers, and PayPal is much more acceptable to us. I'm sorry that I couldn't find this on my own. I'm not an expert on this hobby...

HO paper models that I made :)

Hi everyone. I've made some HO paper models of a mid-size freight house and a small passenger station. Both are meant for 1950's era layouts. And I believe they can at least pass as mockups. Please tell me what you think about them. And if you got suggestions, please let me know. :) Btw, the...

What era draws your attention the most?

I guess we get attached to some nostalgia. :) I also like steam, so I chose the transition period. But I never realized that it was a sad moment for steam until now. :( I also liked propeller driven monoplanes, and I'll probably hang a DC3 or DC7 on my layout. The jet age is gearing up in the...

What era draws your attention the most?

I voted for the transition era because I think the F7A is the most iconic of all engines. ;) Btw, models of F7's (and other F units) are among the relatively inexpensive in the hobby. Even if we consider high end products such as the Athearn Genesis F7A, it's still less expensive compared to an...

    My new industrial layout

I look forward to see a picture of your layout this December. By Christmas, your layout will probably be complete. I'm curious, but why are train sets so popular in the US during Christmas? Loren, what kind of turn outs did you use? Manual or remote? Also, where did you get the structure on...

What's the difference between a remote and manual Atlas snap switch?

Thanks for the info. :) What kind would you recommend for an 8'x4' layout? Btw, I'm on a budget, so if there are less costly turnouts that I could use for my Atlas track, I'll consider them.

What's the difference between a remote and manual Atlas snap switch?

Please pardon me for the ignorance. What's the difference between a remote and manual Atlas snap switch? I'm getting some code 100 switches, and I'm using Atlas track.

How do you find the Bachmann GP-50 (Southern)?

Wow, that's plenty of posts. :) As for the Southern caboose, I'm settling with an unlettered red wide vision caboose. I'm not strict to the prototype. ;) As for a hobby shop here in the Philippines, it makes me sometimes wonder if I should set up one here since there is none. hehe. ;)

How do you properly add external magnets?

I'm considering to add external magnets to my Athearn F7A's motor. This engine was bought in the 90's and I think it's American made. So how do you properly add the magnets? Should they attract to the magnet inside by positioning the opposite poles, or repel by positioning like poles?

How do you find the Bachmann GP-50 (Southern)?

How do you find this loco? http://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/products.php?act=viewProd&productId=1855 I bought one from Beijing (Yin Ke Hobby Shop), and it was priced at a bargain. I don't like DCC yet, and DC engines are more affordable to me. I think it is a good runner. It does...

    My new industrial layout

Loren, I think you used several paper structures in your layout (which I find ubber cool since I can easily buy them in the internet). I live in the Philippines, and there is no local model railroad hobby shop in the country. I see that one of your structures is the factory from scalescenes...

How much mechanical imperfections in engines do you tolerate?

I'm just curious: how much mechanical imperfections in engines do you tolerate? I'm in the process of reviving a late-90's era Athearn SD40-2. What I can do with it is make 4 of the 6 axles work, and use a motor that's not in perfect condition. I can't buy axle gears and a new motor right now...

If you're going to choose between these 2 for asphalt roads...

I have 2 options for asphalt roads: flat black paper board or sandpaper. If you were going to choose between these 2, which one would you choose? If you choose sandpaper, what kind should I buy? I'm actually limited to these 2 choices since I live in Metro Manila. Mike B.

Could you recommend a model rr shop in Europe?

Thanks for the input. :) I'll add the P2K and P2K line to my options. I'll also check the people you've mentioned.

Could you recommend a model rr shop in Europe?

I might be visiting Europe late this year. In particular, I'd be in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Perhaps you could recommend a model RR shop in Europe? Cities within the Netherlands, Belgium, and probably France would be fine. I'm looking for ordinary model rr products that are a little easy on...

Are express reefers necessarily be a part of a passenger train?

I have an Athearn express reefer: Athearn - HO RTR 50' Express Reefer, ARE #256 I don't know if it should necessarily be a part of a passenger train. I want it to be a part of a freight train.
