    Another Layout Thread

Not much to report this weekend. Laid down a few more of the sidings and added feeder wires. I tried doing the feeders several different ways. The way I found to have the best results was to solder the feeder wire to the bottom of a rail joiner before attaching it to the track, and then run...

    Another Layout Thread

The Golden Spike I did it. I finally completed the circuit of track. The only track left to lay is dead end sidings. Compared to laying out the main line circuit and passing sidings the dead end sidings are easy. I spent a lot of time cutting and filing down the rails for the former to get...

Yes at 32 x 80 inches it is exactly the same size as a hollow core. I had actually planned on doing it on a hollow core door but later opted to build my own bench work. Last week I didn't get much done. Mostly patching up the gaps in the road bed and widening it in one spot. I had tried to...

    Another Layout Thread

With the arrival of my supplies early this week, I was able to get started on laying down the road bed. I got most of it done on Friday and Saturday. Sunday I finished it up and was able to spray paint the road bed with Rust-oleum Stone. Overall I am happy with it. Now that the roadbed is a...

    Another Layout Thread

I got my supplies in the mail today! I ordered them from Fifer Hobby and they came in less that a week. This is the second time I have ordered from them and both times I have been very pleased, unlike some other online stores. I also touched up the plan a little bit and added in some terrain...

    Another Layout Thread

Update Thanks for the suggestions and encouragement! The supplies should be arriving some time in the coming week. Mostly flex track and roadbed, I was able to reuse the switches and other parts from my old layout. I did get two Atlas under the table switch machines for the switches that...

scrapping the old plan... in with the new!

The new yard looks a lot better. I have used 1x2 and 1x3 on my layouts and I haven't had a problem with it, and I used to have to store my layout vertically against a wall so it got a lot of up and down movement.

    Another Layout Thread

I had been meaning to start a thread on the progress of my new layout and finally got around to it. This first part is what I have been up to the past two weeks. Last week I tore up my old layout. Based on some feed back I had gotten on here I decided that I probably wouldn't get as much as I...

    Ever sell your layout?

I was definitely going to keep the rolling stock. The other scenery was glued to the layout. I had though about ripping it up and salvaging what I could. That is what I had done on my layout before this, although it had very little scenery on it. This one was much more complete and it seemed...

    Ever sell your layout?

I recently moved to a new, bigger apartment. I have been wanting a layout to run longer trains for a while something my old layout had trouble doing. I am not sure if my apartment is big enough for two layouts, so I have been thinking about selling my current one to make room and raise funds...

    IKEA benchwork

I finished my platform legs. It took me a second trip to Home Depot though. I had to get more wood to make the diagonal bracing; the layout was a bit wobbly with only the horizontal and vertical pieces. I see what you mean about the height. I am a little over 6 ft and the layout is about 4...

    IKEA benchwork

I had thought about using some sort of shelving to elevate my layout off the floor. I am going with the home built method. The shelving units seemed more expensive the building it myself, plus Home Depot is closer than Ikea. I would love to see pictures of your shelving once it is done!

    Interesting reading

It would be a beautiful thing to be more environmentally friendly and switch to electric rail freight. Imagine a train powered only by the electricity generated from the wind turbines along the right of way! But sadly I don't think it will happen because of questionable monetary benefit like...

    Manual Interlocking

I am thinking about rearranging my the yard on my layout. I doing so I end up a crossover, where the two turnouts are related, so that it if one gets changed, the other should get changed. I would like to have it so one switch controls both turnouts. This is in N scale and I am using...
