At 1:00 AM last night I made my best conifer tree yet.
I used the bottle brush method with a few tweaks...
· Layout a 10" piece of masking tape sticky side up
· Cut a 20" piece of wire (I use heavy eclectic fencing wire) bent into an "L" shape
· Cut a 9" piece of hemp rope
· "Taper" the...
Absolute noob here, just starting my first "real" layout beyond the 4X8... with that disclamier....
I found that starting by finding a theme helped me to get focused fast. My "theme" is a "Port of Tillamook Bay railroad as I want it" This gave me some real place names and features to go for...
I like the ideas for getting thicker trunks, I live in the coast range of oregon, and I see some BIG trees prety regulary. Specificaly I like the look of the big cedars, they have tapered trunks that flare out at the bottom rather drammaticaly, but they are genearly not too tall.
thanks
All,
Im using the bottle brush method (hemp rope, wire, tape, drill) I would like to have THICKER trunks on the bottom, has anyone tweaked this method to build larger, tapered trunks? There shoudl be some way to get some bulk in the trunk..
Thanks

Pounce It!
My wife used to work in the Neon sign fabrication biz. She frequently had to translate designs from paper to asbestos fabric. She used what was known as a "pounce" wheel and a "pounce bag"
The wheel looked like a pizza cutter wheel with little spikes on it. Hers how it might work...
Changes:
Changed Point to point cities to be more in line with the proto "Port of Tillamook Bay Rail Road"
Improved yard along front edge
Added "Staging" in and out tracks and reverse loop.
Added mountain tour loop (not proto) but could be...
grewsome: The yard is at the end of a siding. one way in one way out. Ill post a better pic that sould clear it up..
Jim: If you look close theres a thin blue line exactly where you sugest that represents scene divider. Im trying to get some more siding in the hillsboro yard, without...
Thanks for all the help and support...
Ill check out Timber Times.
Here is my latest design, a work in progress.
The "hidden" track is the "loop through." I believe the proto is point to point, but for NASCAR set (my 5 yr old son) a loop is a must. The long spur along the front gives me a...

Here is a basic idea of the outside loop. The circles are all 28" which is nice...
Of course there will need to be some serious scale compression and more than a few "warp tunnels"
Particularly concernign is that there is no "loop". The lower connection between...
Yup, IM on the way....
Now its a matter of scope.. do I focus real tight on just the bay area, or do I expand it out to the cosatal range cross over and even into the indstrial area near hillsboro???
Hillsboro allows for some switching etc. as it is more of a hub, where as the Tillamook bay...
I think I have it now, just need to dig it out!

Has any one tried pices of mono filiment (fishing line) poking up between the rails just far enough to catch the axels? This would help in creating drag which shoud keep couplers tight.
Update! I Downloaded and installed from http://www.xtrkcad.org
New build does not require registration code.
Also, linux version works fine on suse 10.1
Thanks
All,
I have packed as much track as I can fit on a 4 X 7 sheet of plywood! This was my "proof" layout.. proving that I would enjoy this new hobby and that what I read is posible. It has been proven, time to move on... Previously I had wasted some bandwidth in this forum with layout plans...
I updated my latest design to make sure that the "continuous running" loop uses only OPEN switches. In other words, the "through track' on the switch is the mainline. This is my higher speed loop that Ill use for longer cars etc. Iv heard that running high speed through switches is asking for...
FYI: The prices at my local mom-and pop, beat the bigger hobby store.
Atlas code 83 flex.
Mainline Trains in Forest Grove Oregon: $3.00 a stick
Tammies Hobbies in Hillsboro Oregon: $3.95 a stick
Easy math for me.
