not trying to stifle your enthusiasim, but, modern stuff tends to be expnesive, and real old stuff is hard to find, both are expensive to do i'd sugguest somthing from 1960 to 1980. both are pretty good also, Steam Diesel "transition era" is also popular, you can do steam and diesel together

yeah, i hear you i say, an Athearn loco, say, a GP9, does everything, and 5 athearn cars, and a caboose, an oval of track, flextrack works good if its on a board, but first time use Atlas Snap Track, or equavalent what Railroads interest you most? If you want to do them all, in recent years...

    My First Lay Out Design

but, the Prototype only runs one train per block. also, you can run 2 trains in one block, they just must be going the same direction

not sure, DC needs block wiring, DCC doesnt. i use DC, but, will soon changeover to DCC if i can afford it. DC is cheaper tho. if you go DCC, you dont need blocks, but, the locos are more expensive tho. I'd reccomend DCC for a first timer tho. its just easier

personally, i like your first plan best, the 2 dead end spurs could be used as a Factory, or somthing else, maybe you could put some more in, somthing like a Grain Elevator would work, i'd put more in, but thats just me. Another thing, maybe some towns, and Veiw Blocks would be nice, so you...
