    Can you buy this?

Found the pic in the Track Planning book and they do have guard rails. Six rails should look great :thumb:

    Can you buy this?

I was thinking of a 12.5 degree crossing like below. Can't draw it very well with the curves into the rails but this should give an idea. Do you think I also need guard rails? Wouldn't the other track do the same job? Have to find the picture to see if the prototype had them.

    Can you buy this?

I have planned a trestle with separate tracks in both directions. I have seen pictures of railroads doubling up tracks without having any switching or ability to change tracks for a narrower bridge. I think it would really look great to have a bridge track like this. So... Can you buy the...

    Locating turnouts for best operation

Sorry but I wasn't clear in the layout picture. The line on the left separating the stacked loops from the rest of the track is a dividing wall for a storage room. It is non-bearing and I will be building it so it will have an opening large enough for the loops to pull through and the whole...

    Locating turnouts for best operation

I may be missing something but I think there are only three revering loops. I was planning on having sutomatic sensing to switch the DCC signal as they exit the loops. Trying some CMOS flip-flop / NOR gate circuits that will do it for less than $4.00 a loop. Is three too many for this size...

    Locating turnouts for best operation

Good suggestions I guess I put all of the yard tracks there more to see what would fit rather than what the real final layout will be. Working with the layout software it is a lot easier to delete unwanted stuff then it is to working in missing stuff. My thought was - If the yard fits then...

    xuron rail cutter

I would think the Dremel would be better if you have to cut an insulating "gap" in the rail after it is down. This requires a flat cut on both sides. ...Jim

    Locating turnouts for best operation

Well I have been playing with the design software enough to learn that switching turnout locations or moving one a little bit one way or the other can make a big difference in layout operation and avoid problem areas, s-curves, etc. My goal is to use my two hidden loops in either one large...

    The latest version

Is there access to the layout at the bottom of the drawing? Otherwise it looks like a 5' reachover to get to the back tracks.

    The latest version

Don't know if it of interest to you but I am working on a plan that has two stacked reversing loops. I wanted to be able to run one train through both loops or split them and have two separate tracks for two trains. The plan I can up with might be helpful. My plan is 26 & 30" radius so I...

Steve, Do you have a pic of the start/end of the guard rails? Did you angle them?

Thanks for the help - more needed

Big Change OK - I need to stop working with XTrkCAD and get back to my life but I needto get this right. After seeing Galen's suggestions for Chris I decided to try "folding" my loop. The room is big but this would save space for other activities. The little curved stub tracks are only...

    Ocalicreek builds (another) layout...finally!

Galen, Don't worry about using the white foam. Last time I looked the commercial kits for making grades are expanded - not extruded - foam. I saved the box and packing from our TV and plan on using some of the packing foam for hills and side grades. I may even use the cardboard and...

Thanks for the help - more needed

OK, so I am being a little OC with the layout software and running trains to see how it operates and filling open space with track:) . With that in mind the layout has changed a little. Since this is my first layout comments are welcome and, obviously, I am not hesitant to change my layout to...

    Quick Question

Watch out using XTrkCAD NMRA turnouts. The are a lot shorter than the Walthers/Shinohara ones. For example the XTrkCAD NMRA #6 is about 7.4" long while the Walthers/Shinohara is about 11.5" long. Makes a big difference on yard layout. Looking at the Walthers/Shinohara #6 it looks like you...

Galen, You have a great talent. It seems like moving tracks, turnouts and geetting thinks to fit causes me to lose focus on the operation. You take a quick look and see the obvious faults. Here is the latest. Went back to single main line on the outside. Two paths down the ridge and a...

Galen, Got thinking about your “level of scene-cerity" comment and reading more books, etc. Well… this resulted in a drastic change. (Why is it the layout changes more & more as you get ready to build?) Good news is all of my potential layouts have used the stacked & hidden loops so my...
