    Athearn 4-6=6=4 Challenger

From what I understand, No. You have to have DCC.

Yeah, I actually read that somewhere before hand. The nail heads stick up about 1.0mm and there is plenty of clearance. I found out today I was supposed to break the cork down hte middle and flip it over. I didn't do that. I really don't want to pull all the track up again so I will try to...

    Sound for N scale?

I'm too new to know who ESU is. But Athearn just came out with sound in their Challenger 2-6-6-2 steam. expected Aug 2006 From what I've understood this would be the first N scale with sound. I'll have to look into ESU.

    Athearn 4-6=6=4 Challenger

The challenger will have dcc sound: whistle, bell, conductor, brakes, etc. Not only will it have exciting things like that... It will handle a turn with a 9.75" radius!!! This is EXCELLENT news for the mini N layout guys like me! I just heard an EMD F3 with DCC sound at my LHS (HO scale) That...

oh and 60103 - I missed your post earlier, but I didn't have a problem with the nails. I used a small finish hammer and a finish nail driver and all was fine. I am somewhat used to working with this kind of stuff, I help my father-in-law build cabinets once in a while (only when they are being...

    My layout begins

After 100,000 pokes in each fingertip from the rail joiners, and once slipping and darn near slicing my right index finger off, I got the track laid down on cork. The only problem is I think the cork is too narrow now. Hopefully I can make it look right with the finishing touches.:(

John, Dawg gone, that's great. I was trying to think about how I wanted my Sac. Station at that siding on the bottom left, but that top right siding is more fitting. Then East to the Sierra's!

    My layout begins

Okay, I removed the drywall last night. (The nice birch is much prettier also). I just got back from the LHS with a box of cork roadbed and I'll lay the track tonight and post some pictures. I really want some elevation on my layout and was thinking of best placement. (perhaps jetrock would...

So should I just nix the drywall and nail the track right to the plywood, or is the cork roadbed pretty mandatory?

    Materials needed ?

Going to 4' will also save the added expense of a 3rd sheet of plywood!

some thoughts requested Should I start by just nailing this track down to the drywall, and then changing it a bit later because I want some elevation (bridges, mountains, etc)? What about under the track? It looks like alot of your layouts have an elevated track (couple scale feet above...

New Lionel ZW transformer or other

It seems this is a very difficult thing to figure out when staying NON-TMCC. My dad just bought himself a new Berkshire with Railsounds, etc. and he is running it on the same very small layout (a large oval with 2 turnouts) He had to configure the trains so that one is in neutral while driving...

    Ok size???

divide by 160. So a typical 12' wide road would come out to .9 inches or just over 7/8th of an inch. 12 divided by 160 = .075(feet) .075*12= .9(inches) .9 = 9/10 = 7.2/8ths of an inch So if you wanted to accurately model a couple cites around 25 miles apart, you would have to have a layout...

    My mini N layout

You're right about Cal-Pac, I thought SP was alot later than the 1880s, I though that was well into 1900s - regardless, that's the timeframe I want anyway. So thanks, SP it is. So where is 'just down the road from you' ? Are you in Elk Grove or Sactown?

Yes, the 3-rail track is the Lionel O-gauge oval. I haven't posted pictures of my N-gauge track yet. Thanks for the tip on the snap-track. Is it pretty easy to kink the curves of that? The good 'ol eyeball will prove sufficient? again, thanks!

    My layout begins

okay, so I think Atlas' name "snap-track" is a little misleading, or I'm missing something. Does the track actually snap together? Or do I simply connect them with the rail joiners and hope I have a perfect radius, straight line, etc.?

    My layout begins

Okay, so here goes with my mini N layout. I first started with a 26"x48" surface of 3/4" birch plywood. I then carved a 26"x48" square out of a sheet of 5/8" drywall to provide the roadbed. I haven't seen anyone use drywall and I don't know how well it will work, but since I have leftover...
