    Ho superdetailing questions

Great tutorial. Does anyone do uncoupling levers? I am at the point of possibly adding them but I don't have a clue nor do I have any pictures.

    Did you know?

Maybe you get different instructions in the U.K. I just wish you had told me this ten years ago. LOL

    Did you know?

Instructions clearly show weight to be on the bottom!

    Did you know?

I accidentally discovered that the floors on a number of Athearn boxcar kits can be installed upside-down. That puts the shiny metal weight inside and allows the wood-scribed side to face down. Of course you would have to glue the weight to the floor.

    cookie cutting a layout?

My version of "cookie-cutting" leaves the non-roadbed sections intact for use as a scenery base. Some is higher and some is lower than the roadbed. Since I model basically flatlands, my elevation changes are only 2"-4" with some gullies under the tracks occasionally. Besides, I need all of that...

    Car weight

Roger pretty much answered your first question. I would also look for off-centered wheelsets that might otherwise still be in gauge. Your second question, go either way. I have done ballasting before landforms, and I have done it the other way, depends on my mood at the time or which materials I...

    Interesting diesel lineup in Seattle

Here in Texas just north of the BNSF Alliance yard, I still see 40% units in the blue/yellow warbonnet scheme. Almost all of them have been re-stenciled on the cab with BNSF and new #'s. I see NS engines in lash-ups at least once a week. I don't see many BN green engines, no air conditioning I...

    Iron Horse Hobbies

Iron Horse Hobbies in Lewisville TX closed their doors. I don't have any other details but I think it had to do with the high price of rent. It was a neat place to shop. I'll ask around some other shops to see if they have information.

    Wheels

I'm not an expert, but I have observed that metal wheels do not pick up as much "gunk" as plastic wheels. I believe I read somewhere that it has to do with static electricity. When the wheels don't pick up this "gunk", there's less of a chance they will redeposit it down the line. Metal wheels...

    other hobbies?

I'm a music fanatic also, 60's through 80's, have over 1700 albums/CD's and more than 2200 additional songs on the computer. I'm an organic gardener with about 1/4 acre. It supplies vegtables, fruits and herbs almost year around in this part of Texas. Photography, cooking, woodworking...

    Structures Question

It depends on what you're looking for. Walthers makes some impressive kits that are large enough to justify rail traffic. As Glen mentioned, the concrete silos used in Medusa Cement and the ADM grain elevator are not a good fit. It can be remedied with putty and sanding if your skill level is up...

    MRR, likes and dislikes

There's not too many things that I don't like. After running trains, I mostly like scenery and detailing scenery and buildings. I'm not a rivet-counter so I don't do too much to rolling stock except weathering (including graffiti), which I enjoy a lot. Painting LPB's during cold snaps is a great...

    Is this a sad story?

This is truly a sad story Lester. I find myself on the other side, usually getting more than I planned to spend. Even when I don't see anything that strikes my fancy, I can always count on Woodland Scenics scenery products, especially since my LHS is over 30 miles away and I hate to waste a...

I am coming to the Dallas, Tx.

I'm from north of Dallas about 65 miles but am familiar with that area since I grew up near Garland and still shop and railfan near there. A great hobby shop is Discount Model Railroads in Addison, another surburb of Dallas about 6 miles west of Garland. Take I-635 west to Inwood Road and go...
