    Tuesday Do You Have People?

People! Boy do I have people. I think they really bring a layout to life. I have painted over 450 Preiser people and have about 350 either in process or waiting. Right now only about 250 are actually on the layout, but I will have many more once I add additional scenery and buildings.

    another Wal Mart find

Visited my Wally World today and found five-packs of these Malibu cars for $7.97 each plus tax. Picked up four packs totaling twenty cars. Look real good. I got VW vans, Beetles, Carmen Ghias, Ford Thunderbirds, Firebirds, Bel-Aires, Corvettes, lots of different Porches, and Mercedes Benz's. The...

    Sunday - prototype or freelance

Representational prototype...Santa Fe flatlands. That's what I railfanned for years and that's what I'm most familiar with.

Need some advice on track plan?

Your track would look better if you varied the distance from the edge. Use some slightly angled runs combined with gradual s-curves for the best effect. This is what I do and I have some industries on either side. Those on the aisle side are generally low profile to aid in reaching over them. I...

    Making Your Own Figures

Following up on what Russ said, Preiser has at least 6 different sets of 100-120 unpainted figures in the $20 range. There's a thread under product reviews in the technical Q & A section from earlier this year that goes into some detail. http://www.the-gauge.com/showthread.php?t=18192

Friday: Where Do the Loads Come and Go?

Five grain elevators, cement distributor, printing plant, three unidentified warehouses, John Deere tractor distributor, cannery, a flour mill, propane distributor, scrapyard, plastics manufacturer, beer distributor, and a few others I can't remember.

    Thursday: Stinkies, Steam or Sparks?

42 diesels, all GP35 or later. All with Santa Fe plastered on the sides. 9 SD 40-2's lead the pack. Athearn, P2K, Kato and Atlas.

Sunday -- Do you run at home or away???

Strictly a home operator. I use car cards and run until something else takes me away. I pick up where I left off next time. Layout is incomplete but I have three towns with 19 industries, so that keeps me occupied. Nearest club is a modular club that only sets up at train shows.

Hump Day; What Time Is It on Your RR?

I model mid-seventies to early nineties on the ATSF. I vary my rolling stock to accomodate whatever locos I want to run that day. Intermodal with Dash-9's, boxcars with GP38-2's. Anything goes with SD40-2's.

    Order of building a layout?

    Don't know about a thread, but here's how I do it. This assumes that the layout room is already prepared. 1.Plan 2.Benchwork 3.Backdrop 4.Roadbed 5.Track/wiring 6.Test with train 7.Weather track 8.Run train 9.Ballast 10.Run train 11.Buildings/lighting 12.Roads 13.Landscape/scenery 14.Run train...

Question about which road to model? Help!

ATSF in the transition era in the flatlands of Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas would include lots of grain boxcars, early grain hoppers, oil and propane tankers, reefers, boxcars, and more grain boxcars. Companion railroads in these areas would include MKT, MP, SLSF, SP, and possibly KCS. As jetrock...

    Your Local Hobby Shop

My LHS is Silver Spike Hobbies in Denton TX. It's 30 miles away (not considered a great distance in Texas), but it's a great place to shop/browse. It's a one man shop and Chuck the owner knows his customers, knows their preferences, and can obtain anything available from any major manufacturer...

    What's your operational success rate?

I don't keep records but I estimate about 90%. All of my equipment is KD'd, weighted properly, and fine-tuned before going on the layout. Like Lester, dirt is my greatest problem. My layout is in a non-climate controlled room added to the backside of my barn, about 100 feet downwind (upwind?)...

    Spotted yesterday in Texas

In retrospect, I wish I had gotten more of that boxcar in the photo, but I was in the car moving about 55 mph when this photo was taken. Here's another taken in the same location on a different day. It's a pair of GP60B's.

    Spotted yesterday in Texas

Thanks Larry, the long snoot nose threw me off. I've seen plenty of HCLX equipment on this line before but never in this paint scheme. Thanks Miles for the paint scheme ID.

    Wheathering the Rails

Thanks Josh for the compliment on the gons. I have also used the oil on the rails as Jasbourre suggested...don't know if I saved more time or not. Usually the paper towel gets most of it if you don't let it dry first. Either way I usually have to use the Brite-Boy at some stage anyway.

    Spotted yesterday in Texas

While I'm used to seeing all types of power on the BNSF line near me, this is a first. I believe it's an SD40-2T. I don't recognize the paint scheme.

    Wheathering the Rails

Just picked up on this thread...here's my response to your original questions. I spray paint earth, tan, or brown colors to rail already installed. Before it dries, I wipe the tops of the rail clean (almost) with a paper towel. I come back later, uually the next day and use a Brite-Boy cleaner...

Atlas Das 8-40b VS. Atlas GP40-2

In some older Kalmbach model railroading books, the authors always recommended putting the faster unit in front. With DCC you just match them.
