Our Layout (Info and pics to share as goes up)

No wonder it's been so long since you last posted, that room has come a long way. The benchwork looks fantastic, I had not heard of Mianne before. Great photo documentation as well, I'm sure many of the newbies here will appreciate it. I will contact you by PM soon.

    Question for 12-14

Pencil and paper, then like Gil, start to connect track pieces.

    Weekend question, 12-8, 9 and 10

That's a sick photo Mikey. I don't even have a portion of my layout that looks that uncluttered! LOL! I have seven projects going on my workbench right now. When I get frustrated with one, I move to another. I have three eight foot shelves under the layout with projects/kits waiting for me to...

    EZ Track, yes or no?

Flex track gets my vote. You can make custom radius curves, there's less track connections and in my experience it's cheaper to buy the cork and flex track than the pre-molded stuff. I can also vary the height of sidings by using N scale cork instead of the HO.

    Help Identify Manufacture

That picture of the underside looks like an Accurail. Most Accurail cars have the pin. Some newer ones use screws. I have replaced the pins sucessfully with a screw without the gluing, cutting and tapping. I'm not exactly sure of the screw size but I believe they are 2-56's

    Track Questions

Check that Model Power track, it may be steel instead of nickle-silver. Steel = rust! I mistakenly purchased some cheap Model Power track about 20 years ago and it was steel.

    Question 12-6 - Favorite Book

I'm with 2-8-2, Track Planning for Realistic Operation by John Armstrong is my favorite. I have actually worn out my first copy and had to purchase a second one.

    Question for 12-05, track cleaning

I have used everything except the Wahl's oil. I generally run a car equipped with a masonite block followed by a Centerline car with alcohol. I need to do this about once every six weeks unless I run trains every day. Then I can stretch it out. Goo Gone has worked well for me in the past however...

    Quick Question

I use a combination of snap-switches and customline #4's and #6's. I only use # 6's on the mainlines, including passing sidings, arrival/departure tracks, and yard entrances, and plan to use only #6's in the staging yards. #4's and snap-switches work for me in industrial switching and...

Question of the day, 11-21- train shows

I get to go to 2-3 shows a year in either Dallas or Ft Worth, both about 75 miles away. I usually see the same vendors and modular displays each time. The real reason I pay the $7 entry fee is to get the home layout tour booklet. There's generally 20-25 to choose from in all scales and sizes. I...

Question for Nov 16/17 Choose from column A or B...

I'm with Jim Krause on this one, I'd leave the money in the piggybank for now. However if you really twisted my arm, I'd go for a pair of really nice diesels.

Question of the day, 11-14, structures

I have done all but the already assembled. I'm about 60% out of the box and the rest are 1/2 kitbashed and 1/2 scratchbuilt. All of my kits receive additional details and weathering.

    Freight Cars Question

Like Wayne, much of my extensive roster of my freightcars have plastic wheels. I don't really have too much of a "gunk" problem, but I am replacing them as finances permit. I use P2K wheelsets. As Russ pointed out, rust is a greater problem...I used to have to clean off some of the axle tips and...

    Idea! How about this...

There's already a "Product Reviews" sub-forum in the Technical Q & A forum. It doesn't get a lot of use where it is. Maybe it could be promoted into a full forum.

Need some covered hopper information please!

I can't add anything to what Dave-the Train and KATY said, both were very informative posts. I have five grain elevators on my layout and have about sixty of the Accurail ACF center-flow cars, they are good models. I also have about thirty of the Athearn 3-bay covered hoppers, fifteen of the P2K...

New Extention 2 My HO Layout

Josh, I assume that since you have 16 silos that you are kitbashing two ADM elevators and using hopper sheds on both sides. Otherwise the covered shed on the top of your drawing is for trucks. Unless you are using it as a storage facility served only by railcars, you will need a place for trucks...

    Rip Track

Around the corner from where I work there's a rip track for the DGNO railroad. It sometimes doubles as a team track. It is right along a public road which is where I was when taking these pictures from my car. They'll use just about any type of motive power as shown here.
