What is this Precision Manufacturing Item?

What is this? I found it in some HO stuff. It is made by Precision Manufacturing of San Antonio, Texas. I presume it has something to do with HO scale and probably HO brass steam. Precision Manufacturing used to make the test tracks that you could balance or quarter your steam engine drive...

HO Design Built with N Guage

I have heard that a very good layout to build is a good design HO layout built with N scale track. It makes for more scenery and an uncrowded layout. Any opinions? Are you losing the advantage of N scale by doing this or are you maximizing an advantage of N scale?

    Tips-n-Tricks

In N scale, I am using push pins to hold down freight car trucks on a cardboard box. Then I use a spray can to paint them a rust color (or any other color). Faster getting a base coat on the trucks and better than tediously weathering each one individually. (Axles are out of the trucks as I...

Pearl Drops Tooth Polish and Gears

Mikey: This is just IMHO. I discussed this with a local guy here in San Antonio. He said that he thought the toothpaste was done because it is fairly easily cleaned out of the gears. If you don't get it all out, the remaining material may grind the plastic gears to dust. Automobile...

    Kraft Foods Crystal Light

Maybe oversized load for HO. Or regular load? It is not very heavy at all.

    Kraft Foods Crystal Light

My family and I drink a powdered drink called Crystal Light made by Kraft foods. The small containers come in a larger cylindrical container about 1.5" in diameter and 8 inches long. This strikes me as a real kitbashing opportunity, but I am not sure what to use it for. I guess you could use...

Pearl Drops Tooth Polish and Gears

Railron: I tried it and the engine is running much better, no doubt about it. It does have plastic gears (a LifeLike SW9). I put the toothpaste in the gears and only ran the truck back and forth by hand for about two minutes. Then I cleaned the truck with warm, soapy water; then a rinse with...

    Painting Track

I use a black permanent marker for mainline rails. Colors very well. I have to use a brown paint marker for sidings as the brown non-paint marker does not color well. In both cases, final weathering of the ballast is the final touch.

    Intermountain Reefer Weight Addition

I have always preferred Intermountain reefer kits because you could easily add weight to the cars. Is there an easy way to add weight to the assembled reefer cars? (I am unable to get the roof off.) Are the newer IM assembled cars already weighted? Thanks.

Pearl Drops Tooth Polish and Gears

Dick (Clerk): I think you have it pretty well summarized. I received other information stating that Pearl Drops is less abrasive than toothpaste. Also, this burnishing process is called "lapping." I am going to try it today and will report back to see if it solves my binding problem on...

Pearl Drops Tooth Polish and Gears

Understand that what you are looking for is something mildly abrasive that will burnish all the edges and burrs off the gears. In the case of the Athern HO, the gears were all enclosed in a gearbox. The demonstrator put the Pearl Drops in the gearbox and closed it up. Then he ran the engine...

Pearl Drops Tooth Polish and Gears

Listers: I have seen Pearl Drops tooth polish placed in the truck gears of an Athern HO scale engine to polish the gears and make the engine run smoother. (The engine was operated for a fer minutes and then the Pearl Drops was washed out.) It was a fantastic difference in operation. has...
